How Odin Always Held The True Power of Thor
The Avengers is the real reason why the Marvel Cinematic Universe has gone for long. Obviously, the best Avenger out there has to be Iron Man, thanks to his massive popularity. However, the real question is the strongest Avenger who has been joked about in the universe very often. It was quite prominent in Ragnarok where Thor and Hulk fought over this “Strongest.” It was like a friendly scuffle but it was quite enjoyable to watch. This raging question was finally answered in Avengers: Infinity War when saw Thor took Thanos down with a single blow from the Stormbreaker. This made all fans wonder about the true power of the God of Thunder.
In Norse mythology, Odin is seen as the All-Father figure. However, in the Marvel Universe, he is not really omnipotent, but he still possesses the Odinforce with him, which makes him almost invincible. The theory that we have today is that Odin has been using this Odinforce to hold down Thor’s true power all this while. While he is capable to do that, the question is, why will he? Well, if we look at it since the beginning, Thor has not really been the most reliable son. Fans must remember that Thor was very arrogant for most of his life. It was only after Thor, he actually became worthy of being called the rightful king of Asgard.
Until then, the God of Thunder had been focusing more on waging war but once he lost his powers he had to battle for what was actually more important and this made him truly worthy of his immense power. Then happened Ragnarok, where Thor lost the source of his powers, The Mjolnir. But then he went on to tap into the unbridled power of lightning which made him realize that it was never actually the hammer that gave him the power.
This is one of the reasons why we believe that Odin was holding back Thor and his powers, similar to the first movie. Once Odin died, there was nothing suppressing Thor anymore and he had finally used his entire power to take down Hela in Asgard. Another reason why he went on to become so powerful in Infinity War was that he may have inherited the Odinforce as the rightful king of Asgard.
While Thor himself might not be aware of this, overcoming the force of the Infinity Gauntlet is not a small task. No weapon is quite capable of achieving this and it is more likely that Thor was able to do this due to the Odinforce. However, this was something that he could have only inherited after his father passes away. So it makes a lot of sense that Thor’s powers elevated after the events of Ragnarok. However, we still believe that Odin may have had a valid reason to hold back the power of Thor.
It is also quite possible that letting Thor exercise more control over all of the power might lead to disastrous consequences on the cosmic scale and this is why Odin held it back all the while.
