“I cannot go through that for a third time”: Amber Heard Seemingly Declares Bankruptcy, Reveals She Can’t Fight Johnny Depp Again After Paying $1M to Save Face
Amber Heard and Johnny Depp have long been indulged in legal troubles, however, things are now coming to an end. Their relationship started in 2011, but after they got married, it turned into turmoil. Back in 2016, the former filed for divorce citing irreconcilable differences.
After their divorce filing, things started getting complicated when Heard claimed to be the victim of domestic abuse. It got more serious with the former couple facing each other in this year’s defamation trial. After even the second trial did not come in her favor, it seems she is finally putting an end to it.
Amber Heard Settles The Defamation Case With Johnny Depp
After the end of April’s defamation lawsuit, the aftermath was quite severe for the Aquaman star. Amber Heard kept on making efforts to lessen the criticisms she received, however, it was futile. Now that her situation is getting worse as time goes by, she has eventually decided to put an end to the long battle with her former husband.
The American star took to Instagram and seemingly declared bankruptcy by revealing that she cannot fight against the budding musician. Considering her US appeal to be accepted, she wrote that the re-trial will go through the evidence once again. Going through the procedure again could be hard for her as she wrote, “I simply cannot go through that for the third time.”
A little later in the statement, she wrote,
“I cannot afford to risk an impossible bill – one that is not just financial but also psychological, physical and emotional. Women shouldn’t have to face abuse or bankruptcy for speaking her truth, but unfortunately it is not uncommon.”
By settling the lawsuit, she has agreed to pay her former husband $1 million.
A Brief Note on The Defamation Lawsuit
The former pair were engaged in a defamation lawsuit that commenced this year in April and ended in June.
Johnny Depp filed a defamation lawsuit against his former wife, Amber Heard, over an op-ed she wrote for The Washington Post in December 2018. In the piece, she claimed to be a “public figure representing domestic abuse.” Though she didn’t mention Depp by his name, his career was majorly affected which is why he filed the lawsuit.
He requested punitive and compensatory damages of $50 million for affecting his reputation.
The Aquaman star countersued him for $100 million. The verdict favored Depp with the court awarding him $10.35m in damages while Heard was awarded $2m for her counter-claims.
