“I can’t ever recall a bigger discrepancy”: Emilia Pérez Winning 13 Oscar Nominations When The Two Best Movies of 2024 Were Snubbed Is Unacceptable
- Emilia Pérez has made history at the Golden Globes and Academy awards this year.
- The crime musical getting 13 nominations while these two movies have not gotten any is rather baffling.
- Most fans are absolutely unimpressed with the Academy's decision to nominate Emilia Pérez in this many categories.
Emilia Pérez might be getting all the hype this awards season, but fans are as unimpressed as ever with it. The Netflix crime musical has become a major hit with critics who are praising Jacques Audiard for his masterful filmmaking and the performances of the three lead actresses, Selena Gomez, Karla Sofía Gascón, and Zoe Saldaña.
Besides winning 4 out of 10 Golden Globe nominations, the movie has received 13 Academy Award nominations, making it the most-nominated film for this year. Among these, it includes nominations for Best Picture and Best Leading Actress. However, two other movies have been snubbed by this one as they have not been nominated in a single category.
Emilia Pérez has snubbed two of the best movies of 2024
Emilia Pérez is a crime musical about a drug cartel leader who takes the help of a lawyer, Rita Mora Castro (Zoe Saldaña) to transition into a trans woman, leaving behind his wife, Jessi (Selena Gomez), and children. After undergoing gender-affirming surgery, she took up the name Emilia Pérez and once again asked for Rita’s help to return to her kids.
The movie has earned praise from the critics, but fans, especially the Mexican ones, are largely disappointed by it. Winning the Golden Globe award for Best Motion Picture-Musical or Comedy over Ariana Grande’s fantasy musical Wicked landed it in hot waters with most fans. A lot of people took offense to the depiction of the Mexican culture in the film.
That said, the fact that Alex Garland’s Civil War and Luca Guadagnino’s Challengers have not been nominated for a single Academy Award has also surprised many. The former is a dystopian action thriller film which is not only A24’s most expensive production but also its second-highest-grossing one so far. Its critical reception was mostly positive. Cailee Spaeny’s performance was worth a nomination in the Supporting Actress category.
On the other hand, Challengers is a romantic sports film that follows a love triangle between an injured star turned tennis coach (Zendaya), her ex-boyfriend who is also a tennis player (Josh O’ Connor), and her tennis champion husband (Mike Faist). The love triangle ultimately leads to a showdown between Faist and O’Connor’s characters on the ATP Challenger Tour.
All three actors have given phenomenal performances and the score composed by Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross is dynamic and evocative. So, it is truly a shame that neither of these two movies has been nominated in any category at the Academy Awards. In addition to this, Guadagnino’s Queer has also not earned any nominations despite Daniel Craig’s thought-provoking performance.
Most people are displeased with Emilia Pérez receiving 13 Academy Award nominations
Emilia Pérez is a Spanish-language movie that has earned it the honor of being the most-nominated non-English-language film at both the Golden Globes and the Academy Awards. Ironically, none of the three lead actresses are Mexican and the director is French. Not to mention that the score and songs are composed by French musicians Clément Ducol and Camille.
Naturally, fans are not very happy with the movie, and the Mexican people are especially offended by the Spanish dialogues and songs which they claim are inaccurate. To make matters worse, the serious issues of the cartel are also not dealt with properly. Here is what some fans have to say:
The internet is flooded with such reactions to the film getting 13 nominations when neither of Luca Guadagnino’s films has been nominated. The fact that this movie has the same number of nominations as Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer is also very surprising because no one seemed to have anything negative to say about it.
