“I couldn’t go out because I had a Mermaid tail”: Shakira’s Life Was in Danger After a Bizarre Accident on the Set
Shakira is undoubtedly one of the biggest pop icons of the last two decades, loved by everyone (almost!) from Miami to Barcelona. But it won’t be far-fetched to say, the last 12 months haven’t been very kind to the Colombian diva.
The tumultuous period has seen her heart broken by long-time partner Gerard Pique, subsequently leading to her relocation to Miami from Barcelona. Meanwhile, our ears have been blessed with a diss track or two – in honor of her ‘cheating ex’ – from the legendary songwriter.
Shakira has clearly drowned herself in her passion for music, releasing a string of hits in the process. As fans of her music, we don’t really mind that. But it won’t be a bad idea to slow down a bit, as during the filming of one of her new music videos she found herself in the midst of a dangerous accident.
Shakira Involved in a Bizarre Accident on the Set
Last month, Shakira released the official video for her song Copa Vacía, which also features fellow Colombian musician Manuel Turizo. The video shows the 46-year-old as a mermaid.
Generally, a Mermaid symbolize being different or something beautiful being afar from a trash reality. But sometimes they are also used as a metaphor for someone who’s beautiful and weak, stuck in wild waters among sharks (don’t worry soccer fans, we are not talking about Pique!).
Now, Shakira is far from a weak individual. But she was certainly stuck between a wardrobe malfunction and a flooded set during the filming of the mermaid song. During an appearance on Primer Impacto, the Hips Don’t Lie star revealed:
“It was a very long shoot, the fish tank broke, the set started to flood and they had to get me out of there. I couldn’t get out because I had a mermaid tail and I couldn’t climb out. They had to take me out with a crane, a la “every man for himself”. Fortunately, it was just an anecdote and I’m here to tell the story.”
She went on to add that her co-signer Turizo did warn her of the dangers of being in that fish tank. But obviously, Shakira is Shakira: not afraid to get above and beyond in pursuit of another hit.
Early reactions for Copa Vacía which was released on June 29 show her efforts are coming to fruition, with the video attracting more than 48 million views on YouTube.

Reporter Ruins Shakira’s Mood With a Disrespectful Question
As we said at the start, Shakira just can’t catch a break this year. She avoided the accident on the set, but it’s impossible to avoid paparazzi for a star of her stature.
Early this week, she returned to Miami after spending her summer in Europe. But upon her arrival, she encountered a reporter in the airport parking that ruined her mood with an out-of-place question.
As she was approaching her vehicle with her two sons, Sasha and Milan, a reporter from the show “El Gordo y la Flaca”, Leonel Arguelles, asked her if she would give him a chance for love. This clearly irked the legendary singer, who replied: “Please, a little respect.”
The reporter was left stunned and Shakira got into her truck before driving off.
