Anne Hathaway has starred in numerous movies in her career spanning two decades. The Academy Award-winning actress has proved her vast range, from comedies like Get Smart and The Princess Diaries to romances such as Bride Wars and Love & Other Drugs.

Turning down roles is not unusual for Hollywood actors and Anne Hathaway stands no exception to it. However, by doing so, she lost the chance to star in Judd Apatow’s blockbuster comedy. The role went to another actress who gained recognition for her performance in the movie.

Anne Hathaway Turned Down Knocked Up

Anne Hathaway rose to fame with her role in Disney’s The Princess Diaries in 2001. She has starred in many other comedies but she specifically turned down Judd Apatow’s Knocked Up. The movie was released in 2007 to great critical acclaim and dealt with the concepts of pregnancy, parenting, and childbirth.

The movie has a graphic scene of childbirth and this was exactly what led to Anne Hathaway’s refusal to do the lead role which went to Katherine Heigl. Addressing this in an interview with Allure, The Devil Wears Prada star said:

“My issue with it was that having not experienced motherhood myself, I didn’t know how I was gonna feel on the other side about giving birth.”

Later, Hathaway jokingly told Allure, “And by the way, I could pop a kid out and think, Oh, well, I really should have done that movie.” As of now, she is the mother of two young boys whom she shares with actor-turned-jewelry designer Adam Shulman. Shulman and Hathaway got married in September 2012, following which they had a son in 2016 and another one in 2019.

In 2007, Katherine Heigl who played the lead role of Alison in Knocked Up was famous for her portrayal of Dr. Izzie Stevens in ABC’s medical drama Grey’s Anatomy. Although the movie played a key role in smoothing her transition from television to movies, Heigl once said that she believed the plot was a bit sexist and showed women in a negative light.

Despite everything, it has to be noted that this was the movie that catapulted Heigl to stardom. Following Knocked Up, the actress starred in 27 Dresses, The Ugly Truth, and Killers. Currently, she is maintaining a low profile in Hollywood as she continues to star in TV shows and movies alike.

Although Knocked Up has a comedic effect, the movie managed to get the viewers talking about the consequences and issues that couples might be facing due to unexpected pregnancy. The film was received well by critics as well as fans, thanks to the witty writing and heartfelt plot.
