“I didn’t know if I could pull it off”: Kelly Reilly’s Early Doubts About Her Yellowstone Character Vanished After 1 Powerful Experience
- Kelly Reilly has played supporting roles in some rather popular movies and TV shows.
- She was not sure that she would be able to play Beth Dutton, but her mind changed before she began doing it.
- The True Detective actress revealed that she would like to explore a side of Beth that has not been seen so far.
Kelly Reilly has played the sharp-tongued Beth Dutton in the neo-Western drama TV series, Yellowstone. Considering how convincing she looks as the character, it is rather hard to imagine anyone else in the role at this point. However, the actress recently revealed that she was not very sure that she would be able to do it even after she had already landed it.
Reilly is not the first actor who has felt unsure about their role before they began doing it, and she will most probably not be the last. So, even as surprising as this is, it is not entirely unfathomable. The more important part here is the way she gained the confidence that she can play Beth, and it is straight out of a movie.
Kelly Reilly on the Incident That Assured Her That She Can Play Beth Dutton in Yellowstone
Kelly Reilly began her journey as a professional actress back in 1995. She starred as supporting characters in many shows, movies, and theater plays before she got her first lead role in the 2008 horror movie, Eden Lake. The next year, she had a major role in the prime-time British crime drama, Above Suspicion.
Some of Reilly’s most recognizable roles are in the Sherlock Holmes films and the movie Fight, in which she starred opposite Denzel Washington. Since 2018, she has graced the screens as the lead female character, Beth Dutton, daughter of Kevin Costner’s John Dutton in Yellowstone. Beth and John constantly work together to protect the Dutton family’s estate from external threats.
In a recent interview with Town & Country, Reilly revealed that she was not very sure about starring as Beth when she first landed the role. However, her mind changed when she was driving to Montana where the show was filmed.
I was driving from Salt Lake City up to Montana, and it’s about a 7-8 hour drive. Somewhere on that drive, on an open road driving quite fast, there was a freedom to her that I found and an openness to sort of life in the danger of life. That’s when I sort of went, “Okay, I think I know where that is going in sixth gear.”
There is no doubt regarding the fact that Reilly plays Beth to perfection. It could not have been better if she wanted it to be, and the open road to Montana deserves at least a part of the credit for that.
Kelly Reilly Would Like to Explore a Side of Beth Dutton That the World Is Probably Not Ready For
The audience loves Beth for her fiery demeanor, which more or less helps her avenge her father’s death in the recently released second half of the fifth season. However, she is nowhere to be seen after she is done with it.
While Reilly is content with Beth’s arc this season, she has also expressed her wish to see what the outcome would be of mixing Beth and peace. In an interview with Town & Country, she said:
I am definitely interested in Beth, and who she is after some things have happened. Who is she in peace? As an actor you’re like, ‘Ooh, let me at that’. Wouldn’t it be fun to watch Beth go to therapy?
Therapy and Beth in the same sentence doesn’t really make sense, but it would be intriguing to see how that plays out should showrunner Taylor Sheridan ever decide to steer the ship that way.
Yellowstone is available for streaming on Peacock.
