“I don’t have much further need for Hollywood”: After ‘Wife-beater’ Allegations, Johnny Depp Won’t ‘Fall in Line’ for America Following Shift to the UK
Johnny Depp is an iconic Hollywood actor best recognized for his legendary performances in films like Finding Neverland and Pirates of the Caribbean. He went through a difficult period in his professional life. He appeared to lose his appeal after a string of flops at the box office. But after his high-profile court battle with his ex-wife, Amber Heard, everything drastically changed.
Depp’s reputation suffered as a result of the trial. He lost many cherished movie franchises. Disney, for instance, decided to end their collaboration on the Pirates of the Caribbean films. Even though he was responsible for bringing Captain Jack Sparrow to life. And now it appears unlikely that Johnny Depp will make a Hollywood comeback after shifting to the UK.
Johnny Depp is not coming back to Hollywood?
Johnny Depp went through some really trying days as a result of ‘Wife-beater‘ accusations made against him. Following these accusations, he made the decision to leave Hollywood and discover fresh opportunities in French cinema. Depp was questioned about his relationship with Hollywood at the premiere press conference for his most recent French film Jeanne Du Barry, which was directed by part-Algerian director Maiwenn. He made his views very clear. Due to the current culture of American filmmaking, he has little interest in going back to Hollywood.
Depp said to Deadline, “I don’t think about Hollywood. I don’t have much further need for Hollywood myself.” He remarked that it’s a strange time when people want to be themselves but feel compelled to follow the crowd. Depp further stated,
“It’s a very strange funny time when everybody would love to be able to be themselves but they can’t because they must fall in line with the person in front of them. You want to live that kind of life, I wish you the best. I’ll be on the other side somewhere,”
Depp also mentioned his forced resignation from the Fantastic Beasts franchise and the cancellation of his upcoming Pirates of the Caribbean movie with Disney as evidence that he was excluded by Hollywood. He described these situations as making him feel boycotted. Especially when choices are made based on what he considers to be insignificant reasons. Therefore, Depp’s path in the movie business has taken a different turn from what it was.
Saudi Arabia funded Johnny Depp’s Jeanne du Barry
Johnny Depp has made an impressive comeback to the movie industry. And he’s doing it in style by playing King Louis XV in the French movie Jeanne du Barry. The writer-director Maiwenn portrays Jeanne du Barry in this engrossing tale of her rise from a working woman to the position of royal mistress, one of the most important roles a woman could hold in France at the time. What is more interesting is that the Red Sea Fund in Saudi Arabia, headed by Mohammed Al Turki, CEO of the Red Sea Film Festival Foundation, provided funding for the movie.
Al Turki said they decided to fund this film due to its engaging narrative and Maiwenn’s extraordinary vision. Maiwenn is not only a gifted director but also of Algerian ancestry which was a plus point for Turki. He made it clear that they wished to support Maiwenn in her goal of telling Jeanne Du Barry’s story and focusing light on an essential but frequently misunderstood person in history. Al Turki also stated his happiness that the movie was chosen for the esteemed Cannes Opening Night, despite the fact that they hadn’t previously expected such an honor.
