“I don’t think I wanna do that”: ’Agatha All Along’ Star Debra Jo Rupp Almost Turned Down Starring in a Marvel Show Until One Thing Changed Her Mind
- That '70s Show star Debra Jo Rupp appears in the forthcoming Disney+ Marvel show Agatha All Along.
- She would have never starred in WandaVision, if it was not for her grandnephew, who convinced her to do it.
- She thought of Marvel to be something entirely different, but knew of Robert Downey Jr.'s involvement in it.
Debra Jo Rupp, widely known for her lead role as Kitty Forman in the teen sitcom That ’70s Show, is now a member of Harkness’s coven in the forthcoming Marvel series, Agatha All Along. The actress is now acquainted with the Marvel Cinematic Universe up to some extent.
However, she was not always a fan of the franchise and was pretty sure that she did not wish to be a part of it. Consequently, she almost turned down her role in her first Marvel show WandaVision. Luckily, she had someone who convinced her to do it, and she does not seem to have any qualms about it anymore.
Debra Jo Rupp Was Going to Turn Down Her Role in WandaVision
Debra Jo Rupp set out to pursue an acting career over four decades ago. Her journey began with her roles in stage plays and ad commercials. Her first screen role came in 1980 when she starred in the daytime drama All My Children. She has also made appearances in sitcoms like FRIENDS and Seinfeld.
Besides these acclaimed series, she has also appeared in comedy films like Garfield: The Movie and Death Becomes Her. Some of her most recent ventures include WandaVision and Agatha All Along. However, she did not want to appear in the first of these. Her perception of the franchise led to her being skeptical about becoming a part of it.
Luckily, a conversation with one of her relatives changed her mind. During an interview on Jake’s Talks alongside her co-stars, she said:
When I went into WandaVision, I didn’t know much about Marvel. To me, Marvel was comic books and superheroes, and I thought, “No, I don’t think I want to do that.” However, my great-nephew said, “Aunt Debbie, you better do this, you better!” So when I started on WandaVision, I went to the set knowing nothing.
She further said that when she got a couple of days off work, she watched all that she could from the MCU. Her co-star Ali Ahn commented that Rupp knew a lot of things already, as she eventually got over the unfamiliarity with the franchise.
Debra Jo Rupp Had a Hilarious Perception of the MCU Before She Became a Part of It
Rupp has previously stated her unfamiliarity with the franchise before she was tapped for the role of Mrs. Hart in WandaVision. However, what she thought of the franchise might be surprising for some. When Marvel.com asked her about her exposure to Marvel movies, she said:
I thought it was — well, look at my age! It’s like I didn’t grow up with it or anything. I thought it was a cartoon.
She said that she knew that Marvel comic books existed, but absolutely nothing apart from that. So, she assumed that they were cartoons. She also revealed that she knew Robert Downey Jr. was a part of the franchise because she loved him.
