“I don’t want to have another night where I can’t sleep”: Blue Lagoon Star Brooke Shields Hated Her Alcoholic Mom Making Her Life a Nightmare
Brooke Shields idolized her late mother, Teri Shields, from birth. But her terrible drinking problems, which had openly been discussed in the early 1980s, shocked tabloid culture. Because of the Shields women’s codependence, the Black and White actress was forced to mature at a young age.
Teri Shields passed away in 2012, and her daughter is only now able to discuss their complicated but close relationship.
Brooke Shields, an actress, and model is the first to admit that her relationship with her mother/manager was complicated. The actress was only five months old when her parents divorced. Her single mother was confident enough about her dreams for her only child, whom she once described as “the most beautiful child.”
However, as per new reports, The Blue Lagoon actress was reportedly “in anguish” while attempting to help her late mother overcome her excessive drinking habit, according to Radar Online.
Brooke Shields Had A Complex Bond With Her Late Mother
Lana Wilson’s explosive documentary Pretty Baby made multiple headlines following its world premiere in January 2023 due to new revelations from Brooke Shields about her childhood abuse. The actor and supermodel also opened up about her complicated relationship with her late mother and former manager, Teri Shields.
Pretty Baby: Brooke Shields, an upcoming documentary about the actress’ childhood, her rise to fame, and her complicated relationship with her late mother and manager, will be released on Hulu in April.
In the documentary, Shields stated that she felt responsible for keeping her mother alive. Her childhood friend, actress Laura Linney, recalled when her mother used to come home drunk; they used to hide in dark rooms until she passed out. The documentary revealed that behind the glitz and glam of her life was a private battle that had pushed her to the breaking point.
Shields began her career as a child model before landing the role of Pretty Baby at the age of 12. She was well-known for her Calvin Klein jeans advertisements and leading roles in The Blue Lagoon and Endless Love, which catapulted her into the spotlight as she dealt with family issues.
She Doesn’t Want Another ‘Sleepless Night’
According to Brooke Shields, Teri Shields was her mother, manager, and her childhood best friend. She cannot, however, deny that her mother’s excessive drinking has caused her a great deal of pain. She revealed in the late 1990s to 20/20′s Diane Sawyer that her mother’s drinking habit persisted despite her efforts to help her overcome it.
Her mother’s alcohol consumption became problematic and a source of concern, prompting Suddenly Susan actress, to share, “I don’t want to have another night where I can’t sleep. I’m not going to do it anymore. I just can’t. Every time the phone rings at a certain hour, I’m convinced it’s the police telling me my mother is on the side of the road.”
According to her friend, “Teri finally acknowledged” her problem and “sought treatment,” as Radar Online has revealed. The actress suffered yet another loss in 2012 when her mother died. She was the most influential and prominent figure in her life and career.
Despite her mother’s tumultuous relationship, Shields has expressed regret that she never confronted her late mother about their complicated relationship, as well as the loss of her childhood.
She has appeared in several films, including Pretty Baby (at the age of 12), The Muppets Take Manhattan, The Blue Lagoon, Endless Love, and The Hot Flashes. Her documentary film Pretty Baby: Brooke Shields premiered at the Sundance Film Festival on January 20, 2023. It will be available on Hulu in April of this year.
