“I find nothing wrong with a spanking”: Kelly Clarkson Pissed Off Her Fans Advocating in Favour of Spanking Kids
Kelly Clarkson, one of the most celebrated American singers, songwriters, and television personalities, is also a devoted mother of two children. The singer, who rose to fame after winning the inaugural season of American Idol, has been a role model to millions of fans worldwide. Therefore, when she revealed one of her questionable parenting methods people were worried.
In 2018, the singer confessed to spanking her kids to discipline them in a radio interview with 94.1 Atlanta Radio station. It is not an easy job to manage a kid, moreover, two of them, although she loves them dearly she explained why she thought it was a good way to bring her kids back on track when things go haywire.
Kelly Clarkson admits to spanking her kids
Kelly Clarkson raised a lot of eyebrows back in 2018 when she decided she shared her opinion on a taboo parenting habit. Other than being a very successful award-winning singer, the lady is also a mother of two children, both under 10 years of age. In an interview with Atlanta Radio station 94.1, she admitted she is “not above a spanking”. She then further went on to explain what things led her to believe that the method will be effective for her kids. She said,
“I’m not above a spanking, which people aren’t necessarily into,—I don’t mean hitting her hard,– I just mean a spanking.”
This statement sparked a lot of controversies since the American Academy of Pediatrics advises parents against the methodology. While it is still legal in the American states, any form of physical punishment is banned in many places including England, Scotland, and Wales. She then stated her reason saying,
“My parents spanked me, and I did fine in life, and I feel fine about it, and I do that as well,”
Clarkson then explained the public shame and judgment that comes along, although she and her kids are completely fine with it, the outsiders consider it problematic. She said,
“That’s a tricky thing, when you’re out in public, because then people are like, they think that’s wrong or something, but I find nothing wrong with a spanking.”
The songstress then elaborated on the way how she goes about the process saying,
“I warn her—I’m like, ‘Hi, I’m going to spank you on your bottom if you don’t stop right now, this is ridiculous,’ and honestly it’s really helped. She doesn’t do that kind of stuff as often.”
Although the way of parenting worked out for Clarkson it also put her under a lot of scrutiny in the public eye.
Some other parenting styles Kelly Clarkson likes to follow
One of the main pillars of Kelly Clarkson’s parenting method is love and empathy. She has said that it is essential to make your children feel cherished and valued. The singer has also discussed the need for sensitivity in parenting. She believes that parents should try to put themselves in their children’s shoes and understand their perspectives. In an interview with People Magazine, Clarkson said,
“I try to listen to my kids and hear what they’re saying, not just what I want to hear. That’s empathy.”
She also encourages parents to respect their children’s choices, opinions, and boundaries, and to avoid imposing their own values and beliefs on them. In an interview with Parents Magazine, she said,
“I think it’s important to treat kids like they’re people, not just little beings that you have to boss around. They’re individuals, and they deserve respect just like anyone else.”
Although the singer believes in the idea of punishing her kids when they misbehave she also emphasizes the importance of using positive reinforcement and praise to encourage good behavior. Again in an interview with People Magazine, she said,
“I try to focus on the positive and reward good behavior, rather than just punishing bad behavior. It’s all about finding the right balance.”
Hence, even though a few years ago one of her parenting maneuvers sparked a conversation online, she does what she believes is best for her children, her other parenting habits further demonstrate how much she cares and loves her children.
