“I guess they are not a fan of me”: Chris Hemsworth Gets Heartbroken After Martin Scorsese and Quentin Tarantino’s Mean Comments Despite Worshipping Them For Years
In the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Australian actor Chris Hemsworth is most recognized for his role as Thor, the God of Thunder. He is one of the original six Avengers, and most recently, he returned to the role of Thor in the 2022 film Thor: Love and Thunder, making him one of the highest-paid actors in the world.
The film, which was directed by Taika Waititi, starred Christian Bale, Tessa Thompson, Natalie Portman, Russell Crowe, and others. The 1980s adventure genre served as Waititi’s inspiration for this romance-focused picture. Both critics and viewers had conflicting opinions of the movie, but both groups were quite complimentary of the actors’ performances. Chris Hemsworth, who has been a longtime member of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, addressed Martin Scorsese’s remarks. Let’s explore.
Chris Hemsworth addressed Anti-Marvel comments by Martin Scorsese and Quentin Tarantino
In his feature with British GQ, back in June this year, the Australian actor Chris Hemsworth, who is adored by thousands of fans across the world as God of Thunder, Thor, opened up about the unfavorable comments made by Martin Scorsese and Quentin Tarantino about comic book movies and franchises.
Hemsworth said, “That’s super depressing when I hear that. There goes two of my heroes I won’t work with. I guess they’re not a fan of me.”
The actor continued to express that he is forever grateful to have been given a chance to play the Norse God in the movie and noted, “I’m thankful that I have been a part of something that kept people in cinemas. Now, whether or not those films were to the detriment of other films, I don’t know. I don’t love it when we start scrutinizing each other when there’s so much fragility in the business and this space of the arts as it is.”
The Australian actor, however, goes on to mention that despite all of the comments made by the filmmakers, he still calls them his heroes, adding that in a heartbeat he would leap to work with any of them, but would say more about the broader option on that topic. Hemsworth noted that he doesn’t think any of them have an answer but everyone’s trying.
What did Martin Scorsese and Quentin Tarantino say about Marvel movies?
In his recent GQ feature, Martin Scorsese urged everyone to fight back against comic book and franchise movies and support directors like Christopher Nolan. He said,
“The danger there is what it’s doing to our culture. Because there are going to be generations now that think movies are only those—that’s what movies are.” When he was told that maybe the audience already believes that, he continued,
“They already think that. Which means that we have to then fight back stronger. And it’s got to come from the grassroots level. It’s gotta come from the filmmakers themselves. And you’ll have, you know, the Safdie brothers, and you’ll have Chris Nolan. You know what I mean? And hit ’em from all sides. Hit ’em from all sides, and don’t give up. Let’s see what you got. Go out there and do it. Go reinvent. Don’t complain about it. But it’s true, because we’ve got to save cinema.”
Scorsese said he does think that manufactured content is not really cinema because it gives the audience nothing. He added, “What I mean is that it’s manufactured content. It’s almost like AI making a film. And that doesn’t mean that you don’t have incredible directors and special effects people doing beautiful artwork.”
Back in 2019, the filmmaker addressed the same thing during an interview with Empire Magazine and said “I don’t see [ Marvel movies]. I tried, you know? But that’s not cinema. Honestly, the closest I can think of them, as well made as they are, with actors doing the best they can under the circumstances, is theme parks. It isn’t the cinema of human beings trying to convey emotional, psychological experiences to another human being.”
Tarantino on 2 Bears 1 Cave Podcast said, “You have all these actors who have become famous playing these characters. But they’re not movie stars. Captain America is the star. Or Thor is the star.”
Kevin Feige weighs in on Martin Scorsese’s comments about Marvel movies
During an interview with The Hollywood Reporter on the Awards Chatter podcast, Marvel Studios head Kevin Feige went ahead to address the issue and said, “I think that’s not true. I think it’s unfortunate. I think myself and everyone who works on these movies loves cinema, loves movies, loves going to the movies, loves to watch a communal experience in a movie theater full of people.”
Just like Chris Hemsworth, Robert Downey Jr. was also asked about the comments and he noted back in 2019 while speaking to Howard Stern that it makes no sense to say that MCU is not cinema, but added that he appreciates the filmmaker’s opinion and he thinks it’s like anything where everyone needs all the different perspectives so that they can come to the center and move on.
Jon Favreau also weighed in back in 2019 during his interview with CNBC and said that the filmmakers have the right to share their opinions, adding that he wouldn’t be doing what he is doing if they didn’t carve the way and served as a source of inspiration for him. He lastly added that they can express whatever they feel like.
