“I have the same fatigue”: Zack Snyder Acknowledges the Biggest Problem in Marvel and DC Movies After Avengers: Endgame
Zack Snyder just confirmed the existence of superhero fatigue. In 2023, the concept of superhero fatigue is becoming extremely real. In the last 20 years, Marvel has ruled with an iron fist over comic book lovers. Even DC had its glory days in Zack Snyder’s hands. However, with the number of epic flops recently, many seem to think the genre is saturated with too many movies coming out, as Hollywood sees this as a surefire way to make those box office numbers. Even Disney head Bob Iger had to admit that Disney was pushing quantity over quality in the past few years, which led to the downfall of the company.
Gone are the days when superhero movies were absolute blockbusters, pulling record-breaking numbers at the box office. Be it DC’s Aquaman 2 or The Flash, Marvel’s Secret Invasion, or The Marvels, there have been nothing but epic bombs and misfires in recent times. The audience seems burned out and so does Zack Snyder, who opened up in a recent interview about how he shares the same fatigue.
Zack Snyder shares superhero fatigue with the rest of moviegoers
The Rebel Moon director has been one of the most influential figures in the DC universe. He has a dedicated army of fans that includes the likes of Christopher Nolan, who cannot praise him enough. DC had one of its peak days during Zack Snyder’s time. However, recently, moviegoers seem less than pleased with superhero movies, so much so that people flocked to watch Oppenheimer and Barbie in the halls to make them the biggest hits of 2023 instead of any MCU or DC movies. In a conversation with The Atlantic, the director confirms that he is also suffering from the same superhero fatigue as common moviegoers.

According to Zack Snyder, superhero movies are in “a cul-de-sac now” and moviemakers are no longer interested in making self-contained films.
“No one thinks they’re going to a one-off superhero movie.”
This is being seen as one of the prime reasons why audiences are turning away from the likes of Marvel and DC. Everyone is interested in establishing a franchise to recreate the magic of the Avengers or Justice League. This leads to unnecessarily complicated plotlines and the audience is fed up with it. A case in point is the Marvel multiverse saga, which has been an epic failure so far, with the possible exception of Loki. However, with Marvel’s Avengers: Secret Wars, the multiverse saga will conclude, and with DC also gearing up for Superman: Legacy, the audience can hope for the landscape to change in the near future.
Christopher Nolan showers praise on Zack Snyder, saying he sees his influence everywhere
Zack Snyder is currently at the top of the Netflix charts, despite mixed reviews from critics for Rebel Moon: Part One – A Child of Fire. In the same profile piece done by The Atlantic on Zack Snyder, Christopher Nolan, who served as a producer for Snyder’s Man of Steel, could not stop gushing about what an important place Snyder holds in the superhero movie genre. He said to the outlet:
“There’s no superhero science-fiction film coming out these days where I don’t see some influence of Zack. When you watch a Zack Snyder film, you see and feel his love for the potential of cinema. The potential of it to be fantastical, to be heightened in its reality, but to move you and to excite you.”

Nolan has been a Snyder admirer for decades now. He recognized the brilliance of Watchman and also gave a nod of approval for Rebel Moon. The Inception director always believed that Watchman was ahead of its time and in an interview with Indie Wire he confessed his adoration for the movie and how he was in awe of it:
“Always believed ‘Watchmen’ was ahead of its time. The idea of a superhero team, which it so brilliantly subverts, wasn’t yet a thing in movies. It would have been fascinating to see it released post-Avengers.”
Zack Snyder is now busy celebrating the success of Rebel Moon, which debuted to 23.9 million views in the first three days of its arrival on Netflix.
