“I just felt I had no chance of winning”: Eminem Regrets Missing Out on a Huge Opportunity as He Decided to Not Attend Oscars?
With the Oscars being the most recent event, people are still celebrating the winners. The epic comeback of Brendan Fraser with The Whale, and the door of opportunities opened by Michelle Yeoh with Everything Everywhere All at Once, is being constantly hyped by the fans. But since we are still quite invested in the Oscars let’s throw the light upon Eminem, who skipped out on his 2003 Oscar win.
Throwback to the time when the Rap God Eminem skipped out on his 2003 Oscar win, only to regret it later. Because he won’t win, the rapper skipped attending the ceremony. The regression ended for Eminem only when he got the opportunity to perform his Oscar-winning song 17 years later.
Eminem Skipped Attending The 2003 Oscars
Skipping out on one of the most prestigious awards shows like the Oscars is a regretful thing. Not many get the opportunity of attending the Academy Awards. Eminem was one of the few, who had the opportunity and yet decided to blow it. Most celebrities who get nominated, usually show up with the hope of winning. However, Eminem being one of a kind, decided to skip out on the Oscars despite being nominated.
In 2003, Eminem was nominated for his song Lose Yourself, however, the rapper chose not to attend the ceremony. Simply failing to realize the potential of his song and its chances of winning, the Rap God, decided to sleep in. Further, he sat down with Behind The Boards for an interview where he stated his reasons. “I just felt I had no chance of winning, because, you know, when I heard I was nominated, I thought that was for actors.” the rapper stated.
“I was not sure what exactly Grammy or Oscar meant, what certain awards meant, I was not sure what they meant, so even MTV awards, all that stuff, I just didn’t know what awards meant, and this particular award…I didn’t go to the show…I just felt like I didn’t have a snowball’s chance of winning.” Eminem mentioned.
Being unaware of the policies of the Oscars the Mockingbird singer decided to skip. However, upon learning about his Oscar-winning moment, the rapper seemingly regretted missing out on the ceremony.
Eminem’s Regret Ended With His Oscar-Winning Performance
Failing to attend the biggest night in Hollywood, usually comes with regrets. Most celebrities who skip out of the event or fail to be present usually express their remorse, same for Eminem as well. The Real Slim Shady decided to stay home and sleep because he didn’t expect, he even had the slightest chance of winning, only to regret it the next day.
During an interview with Southpawer Extra, the rapper shared his whereabouts on the night of the Oscars. “I was sleeping that night…I just felt I had no chance of winning,” he mentioned. Further, expressing his remorse over his decision, Eminem stated to Variety, “Back then, I never even thought I had a chance to win.” Also, the Rap God expressed his honest feelings about the event, “back at that time, the younger me didn’t feel like a show like that would understand me.”
“But then when I found out I won, ‘That’s crazy!’ That to me shows how authentic and real that award is – when you don’t show up and you still win. That makes it very real to me.” Eminem’s win changed his opinion about the Oscars.
Further, as per ParleMag, the Venom singer expressed his repentance. “He expressed he was ‘blown away’ by his win and regretted missing the 2003 Oscars.” the article read. However, the rapper got the opportunity to perform at the 2020 Oscars, which kind of helped him get over his regret of not attending the 2003 Oscars. When Variety asked the rapper whether he enjoyed his performance, he stated, “Absolutely. I got to hug Salma Hayek!” Eminem performed his Oscar-winning song, Lose Yourself during the 92nd Academy Awards and won the hearts of millions.
