“I know as little as you”: Benedict Cumberbatch Has a Disappointing Update on Doctor Strange 3
Marvel fans love to dig deep into clues from movies and interviews to guess what’s coming next in their favorite superhero stories. But even they might be stumped when it comes to figuring out the future of Doctor Strange.
It’s been more than 2 years since the release of Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness (the second movie). Fans are eagerly awaiting the upcoming installment, but details remain unclear. Even Benedict Cumberbatch, the actor who portrays Doctor Strange, recently admitted he’s largely in the dark about Doctor Strange 3.
Benedict Cumberbatch Stays Mum on Doctor Strange 3
Recently, Benedict Cumberbatch appeared on Bingeworthy TV podcast to promote his upcoming Netflix series Eric, which debuts on 30th May. In the series by Abi Morgan, the Marvel star plays Vincent, a father searching for his lost son in 1980s New York. With the help of Eric, a monster hiding under his son’s bed, Vincent discovers grim realities about the city and himself.
During the podcast appearance, he remained tight-lipped about Doctor Strange 3. Actors often try to keep upcoming movie secrets to themselves, but Cumberbatch seemed genuinely uncertain about what’s next for Doctor Strange.
When asked if there would be another Doctor Strange movie before the next Avengers film, he simply said, “Who knows!” This is different from how Marvel usually keeps things hush-hush. When asked if the character would show up in Avengers 5, Cumberbatch mentioned he wasn’t given all the details (seeming more clueless than secretive). He said:
“We will see. We will find out. I’m not sure where he’s been and what he’s been up to and who with, but yeah, I know as little as you.”
While other actors often keep it chill to avoid spoiling surprises (leaving us hanging by not giving a straight answer), the 47-year-old seemed genuinely clueless about the future of Doctor Strange.
Is a Third Doctor Strange Movie on the Horizon?
The 2022 Doctor Strange movie left fans with a lot of questions, and even the actor who plays him, Benedict Cumberbatch, doesn’t seem to have all the answers yet. But there are some clues! In the scene after the credits, fans meet a new character named Clea (Charlize Theron) — a powerful sorceress with deep ties to Doctor Strange in the comics.
The movie also hinted at big problems coming from Strange messing with different realities, even teased by screenwriter Michael Waldron. He told Marvel.com:
It felt like the perfect time to finally introduce this very pivotal character [Clea] in Doctor Strange’s canon. Strange went to the Multiverse and tampered with it as much as you probably possibly could. I don’t think it’s any surprise per the rules that Reed [Richards] laid out that he caused an Incursion.
The American producer continued:
So now there’s an oncoming collision of universes. But what does that mean for the MCU? We’ll find out. But we’ve got a semi-corrupted Doctor Strange and Clea on the case! So it’s going to be a lot of fun.
Another upcoming movie, Avengers 5, is rumored to be happening soon. This might mean Doctor Strange will team up with other heroes for a big fight. While there’s no guarantee of a new Doctor Strange movie soon, the character likely isn’t gone for good.
