“I owe you all an apology”: Anne Hathaway Apologized to Fans for Making Fun of People With Physical Disabilities in $26.9M Movie
Anne Hathaway is the epitome of beauty, but in the past the American actress apologized for her portrayal of limb disability in one of her movies that caught everyone’s attention and brought her a lot of criticism. In her two-decade long acting career, she has played a wide array of roles in films of different genres, and earned several awards for her powerful on-screen performances.
Anne Hathaway apologizes for her role in The Witches
Anne Hathaway played the role of a cruel Witch in the film The Witches. The movie shows a group of mean wizards with three long fingers on each hand and as a result when the film was released, audiences felt the visual portrayal of the Witches was a direct insult to people with disabilities, which caused the hashtag #NotAWitch to trend on Twitter.
At the time, the film sparked a lot of criticism, and therefore actress took to Instagram and released a video with a long caption in which she apologized to her followers.
The Princess Diaries movie actress wrote,
“I have recently learned that many people with limb differences, especially children, are in pain because of the portrayal of the Grand High Witch in The Witches.”
She continued,
“As someone who really believes in inclusivity and really, really detests cruelty, I owe you all an apology for the pain caused. I am sorry. I’m sorry to kids with limb differences: now that I know better I promise I’ll do better. And I owe a special apology to everyone who loves you as fiercely as I love my own kids: I’m sorry I let your family down.”
According to a source close to Warner Bros., the company was profoundly concerned to learn that their representation of the fictional characters in The Witches hurt people with disabilities and apologized for any harm caused.
Adam Shulman and Anne Hathaway’s Relationship
Anne Hathaway has been married to producer Adam Shulman since 2012 and shocked her fans by exchanging vows with him in a secret ceremony in California. The couple has two children together, Jonathan Rosebanks and Jack. After their wedding, the Love & Other Drugs movie actress has kept their relationship out of the spotlight.
The Devil Wears Prada actress appeared on Jimmy Kimmel Live in October 2020 and admitted that she and her husband had not made any decision on further expanding their family or to have another child.
She told Kimmel,
“Yeah, I don’t know I don’t know. Like, some minutes I’m like, yes, absolutely and some minutes I’m like, the world scares me too much,’ and I think I’ve got two healthy ones and that feels really great. So I don’t really know yet.”
The couple was recently spotted together at the premiere of The Music Man and later enjoyed a casual date night at Soho House in New York City.
