“I shouldn’t complain”: Tom Felton Couldn’t Handle Life After Harry Potter? Went to Rehab After Having a “Perfect” Life
Harry Potter star Tom Felton who slayed his role as one of the key characters in the series, revealed that even though he had an incredibly successful life after playing Draco Malfoy, he had to face certain challenges in his life.
After the triumphant Harry Potter series and having a fortunate life Tom Felton had challenges in his personal life. Things weren’t as they looked from the outside. Instead, the actor suffered from severe issues and had to get connected with a rehab to cope with those difficulties.
Tom Felton’s Rehab Journey Despite Having a Perfect Life After Harry Potter
Tom Felton is undeniably a talented actor in Hollywood whose cheeky attitude landed him a role in the massive hit Harry Potter series. Little did fans know that Felton actually wanted to play Harry Potter in the series and auditioned for it as well but with the attitude he wore during the auditions, he was selected to portray Draco Malfoy. Ten years after the series and a successful life, Felton dealt with some major challenges like depression and mental illness that were affecting the actor severely.
During his tough battle, Anna and The King star was visited by a professional interventionist. Tom Felton’s family, friends, and close people came together to address his mental issues as a significant step to help Felton cope with his challenges. The actor opened up about his substance abuse and mental health struggles in his memoir Beyond the Wand: The Magic and Mayhem of Growing Up a Wizard and wrote:
“From the outside it was perfect: I had a dog, a nice car, and a house in LA. You trick yourself into thinking, well, these are the things I’ve been told make you happy, but they don’t. The reason I didn’t talk about how I felt before was down to a mixture of being British and male and being told that because everything was apparently going great, I shouldn’t complain.”
Felton addressed that his lifestyle looked perfect and flawless from the outside but the truth was more than that. The actor revealed that his battle with mental issues was not just due to excessive drinking, going out, and Hollywood lifestyle, but there were numerous underlying causes. However, Felton had an empowering experience while seeking help and going through rehab, and acknowledged that there were resources and support available for him that indeed worked out for him.
Tom Felton Claimed That He Got The Best Role in Harry Potter
Tom Felton who is best known for Draco Malfoy revealed in his memoir that he initially wanted the role of Daniel Radcliffe‘s Harry Potter who is the central protagonist of the series. But as Felton auditioned for the role, his cheeky attitude earned him the role of Draco Malfoy who is one of the key antagonists in the series. But despite not getting the desired role, Felton acknowledged that his role was the best he could ever get. The actor wrote:
“Draco is the best role I could have got because he’s a slimy git and so vastly different from who I am. He’s an only child with a huge sense of entitlement and crap parents.”
the Feed star found the role of Draco Malfoy interesting as it was something new for him. Felton had a different upbringing in his real life than that of the character he played and considered the role the best he could ever get in the series. As a result, Tom Felton’s portrayal of Draco Malfoy turned out to be influential and was praised immensely.
