Much has been written about Cillian Murphy’s brilliant portrayal of larger-than-life protagonist J. Robert Oppenheimer in Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer, making it easier to ignore a number of crucial supporting members of the cast.

Since the movie is centered around the theoretical physicist’s Manhattan Project and its aftermath, including Oppenheimer’s security hearing in 1954, Nolan’s cameras (yes, the big Imax ones) rarely point toward his personal life, and in particular, his relationship with his wife Kitty Oppenheimer.

The role of Mrs. Oppenheimer is played by Emily Blunt. Although in multiple interviews she has expressed her happiness at the importance of her part in the script, it’s no denying the movie is overwhelmingly centered around its male cast.

Why Tom Cruise Called Emily Blunt a P*ssy

Emily Blunt missed out on the majority of the action in Oppenheimer, as she watched Cillian Murphy (much like Mrs. Oppenheimer in some way) take all the plaudits and most of the attention. But her esteemed resume includes a leading role that saw her go toe-to-toe with Tom Cruise in a science fiction action movie.

The British actress played the role of Rita Vrataski in Edge of Tomorrow. Vrataski, a decorated warrior, helps Major William Cage (Cruise) save the human race from an alien species.

While Vrataski and Cage struggled in the movie, behind the scenes it was Blunt who had a nightmare experience thanks to the large mech suits the lead characters had to wear. The 85-pound suits were not only torturing due to their sheer weight but also made her feel claustrophobic. She recalled:

“We had to wear these enormous suits, which I think would’ve been great if we had CGI’d them, but we wanted to do it in a tactile way… When you hear the word ‘tactile,’ you think that sounds nice and cozy. There was nothing cozy about these suits. It was like 85 pounds. It was so heavy… The first time I put it on, I started to cry, and [Cruise] didn’t know what to do. I was like, ‘Tom, I’m not sure how I’m going to get through this shoot,’ and just started to cry, I said, ‘I’m feeling a bit panicky about the whole shoot.’”

Cruise, who has built his career by going the extra mile, especially physically, to make sure action sequences are to the point, had a very casual response to Blunt’s pain.

“He [Cruise] just stared at me for a long time, not knowing what to do, and he goes, ‘Come on, stop being such a p*ssy, OK?’,” she revealed.

Blunt added that instead of getting offended by Cruise’s laid-back reaction she got caught off-guard and ended up laughing.

Emily Blunt Gives Her Thoughts on Edge of Tomorrow 2

Despite the heavy mech suits, The Devil Wears Prada actress loved working in Edge of Tomorrow and is keen to reunite with Cruise, who continues to focus on his Mission: Impossible franchise, for a sequel.

“I’m so ready. I’m not the impediment, I promise. I wish there could be one,” she revealed. Blunt went as far as confirming she has read a potential script for the movie.

Edge of Tomorrow was released in 2014. It’s been close to 10 years and we’ve heard nothing concrete about its sequel. One of the reasons behind the lack of push for another next chapter might be the relatively flat performance of the original movie, which only managed to collect $370 million at the box office.
