Regarded as a pop icon, Ariana Grande rose to fame by starring as Cat Valentine in Nickelodeon’s Victorious from 2010 to 2013. Later, she appeared in the spin-off series titled Sam & Cat from 2013 to 2014. Grande released her debut album Yours Truly in 2013, which was followed by a successful career that comprised some of the most iconic songs from her other albums, including Bang Bang, Break Free, Problem, and more.
The singer-actress fourth album, Sweetener, won the Grammy Award for Best Pop Vocal Album, and her fifth album, Thank U, Next, broke several streaming records. Ariana Grande recently released her seventh album, titled Eternal Sunshine, which impressed the audience with the singles Yes, And? And We Can’t Be Friends. In an interview, the socially active singer-actress revealed the reason she went off Twitter.
Ariana Grande gets candid about feeling unsafe with the press and interviews
During an appearance on Shut Up Evan, Ariana Grande was asked about her decision to not give a lot of interviews compared to her peers. She explained that when she was young, the relationship she had with the press and interviews felt unsafe to her. She added that there were a lot of false stories coming out of nowhere, which she couldn’t understand at the time.
Grande said interviews just kind of freaked her out for a while. The actress-singer deactivated her Twitter account in 2021, and she explained that she had always wanted to say things to her fans that were only meant for them so that they could have their jokes and conversations. But the singer pointed out,
Sometimes it would travel in a way that was not intended to, where people who do not speak our language would become involved. But that wasn’t really why I deactivated or why I changed my relationship to it; I think I was just so sensitive, and it started taking a toll on my relationship with my work. I wanted to prioritize being an artist and having a healthy relationship with my fans and with art.
Ariana Grande stayed away from twitter but was active on Instagram and was able to communicate with her fans. She was quite active on Twitter back in 2018, and one of her tweets slamming ex-fiancé Pete Davidson’s act on SNL did become one of the hot topics of discussion. Davidson, during an episode hosted by Jonah Hill in 2018 with Maggie Rogers as a musical guest, asked the singer, ‘Hey Maggie, I’m Pete. You want to get married?’ To which she replied, ‘NO’, and the comedian reacted by saying ‘O to 3’ mocking his previous relationship. (via Capital FM)
Later, Ariana Grande took to Twitter and, in now-deleted tweets, wrote, ‘For somebody who claims to hate relevancy, you sure love clinging to it, huh’ with another one just being, ‘K, that’s the last time we do that.’ The two of them started dating in May 2018, and by June they were engaged before calling it off in October. Grande’s ex-boyfriend, Mac Miller, passed away during their relationship.
Ariana Grande slammed Grammys via Twitter
The actress-singer, who was scheduled to perform at the 61st Annual Grammy Awards, decided to pull out due to production disagreements. But producer Ken Ehrlich claimed that the reason was because she felt that it was too late for her to pull something together. Grande was not there to hear claims, as she took to Twitter to clarify what had happened. (via US Weekly)
I’ve kept my mouth shut, but now you’re lying about me. I can pull together a performance overnight, and you know that, Ken. It was when my creativity and self-expression were stifled by you that I decided not to attend. I hope the show is exactly what you want it to be and more.
She returned to the Grammys in 2020 to perform. The singer has been criticized for blackfishing [making her skin darker], and in 2019, she was accused of exploiting Asian culture by using Japanese characters in a misspelled tattoo. She wrote on Twitter that she can not read or write Kanji, so what does the audience want her to do? She added that so many people make such mistakes and get away with them.
Ariana Grande also mentioned that people on Twitter do not know how to be forgiving or gentle when someone makes an innocent mistake. Princess Nokia claimed that her song 7 Rings sounds similar to Mine from her 1992 mix tape. Grande wrote in response, ‘White women talking about their weaves is how we’re going to solve racism’. She later apologized.
One of the controversies involving the singer that shook the internet was her romance with co-star Ethan Slater. It was confirmed in July 2023 that Grande and her husband Dalton Gomez had called off their marriage after two years, and shortly after this, link-up rumors with Wicked co-star Ethan Slate started to circle, and they were not pretty. Despite the actress being away from Twitter, the users did not miss out on a chance to troll the singer for dating the actor who voiced Sponge-bob.
While Grande and Slater never commented on their relationship, Slater’s ex-wife, Lilly Jay, noted that singer is not a girls’ girl. She added while sharing with Page Six that her family is just collateral damage. It was reported that Gomez had not given up on his marriage with Grande, but the link-up with Slater assured him that his marriage was over.
