“I thought he was basically just Palpatine”: Chris Evans’ Fantastic Four Fails Doctor Doom as Fans Reduce the Horrifying Villain to Pathetic Standards
- Chris Evans' 'Fantastic Four' movies made Doctor Doom look disappointing and weak.
- The 2015 reboot further misrepresented him as a socially awkward hacker.
- These films make Doctor Doom seem worthless, leading fans to mock him.
Victor Von Doom, the master of sorcery and science, is a titan of the Marvel Universe. In other words, he’s the ultimate overachiever with a flair for world domination! Even though Doctor Doom is a big shot in the comics, his movie versions have been a letdown. And it’s the Chris Evans’ Fantastic Four movies that made Doctor Doom look pretty lame.
Instead of being the terrifying villain he’s supposed to be, he ended up looking more like a guest in a second-rate Halloween costume. From the overly simple 2000s versions to the strange 2015 reboot in Fantastic Four, the character’s big-screen depictions haven’t quite hit the mark—leaving fans really unimpressed!
Chris Evans’ Fantastic Four Misses the Mark on Doom
Julian McMahon’s Doctor Doom in the 2005’s Fantastic Four was a real shocker. He was very different from the dark, complex villain in the comics. The character was reduced to just a vengeful rival who played with electricity—a far cry from the omnipotent sorcerer-king of the comics.
The film turned Doom from a cosmic-level threat into just an inventor with a grudge. It took away his magical powers and reduced his ambitions to petty revenge. Check out some fan reactions to see their take:

When I was a kid, I thought Dr Doom was basically just "Evil Iron Man".

I still don’t know what bros powers are 😂

The sequel, Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer, further diluted the character.
The plot felt more like a last-ditch effort to make Doom interesting again rather than a genuine exploration of his motivations. The film’s ending, where Johnny Storm defeats Doom by using his teammates’ powers, really insults Doom’s intelligence and strength.
The 2015 Reboot of Fantastic Four was Also a Doomed Attempt
In the earlier movies, Doctor Doom was (undoubtedly) a bit of a letdown. However, the 2015 reboot didn’t just water Toby Kebbell’s character down—it outright discarded him! In this version, Doctor Doom becomes a socially awkward hacker with questionable hygiene. His transformation into a monstrous villain was so rushed and poorly explained that it lacked proper character development.
The fundamental issue with these movies is that they just didn’t understand what makes Doctor Doom tick. They tried to make him menacing but ended up with a misunderstood character who’s more tragic than terrifying.
Doom is not merely a villain; he is a complex, multi-faceted character with an insatiable thirst for power and knowledge. His brilliance, arrogance, and ruthlessness are integral to his appeal. As the Marvel Cinematic Universe keeps growing, fans are crossing their fingers that they’ll finally get a Doctor Doom who actually lives up to the name.
Maybe one day (the release of Avengers Doomsday—1 May 2026), he’ll be as intimidating as his comic book self, instead of just being the villain who always seems to lose to the Fantastic Four. And with Robert Downey Jr. set to be playing him, it looks like Doom might finally get some respect!
