Channing Tatum has always been passionate about playing Gambit. He has talked a lot about wanting to bring this charming anti-hero to life in movies. Despite his constant efforts, it felt like his dream was always just out of reach.

The Lost City star’s quest to play Gambit was full of obstacles. After Gambit’s weak portrayal in X-Men Origins: Wolverine, Tatum was eager to fix that. He spent years trying to get a solo Gambit movie made. The project faced many problems with changing directors, hesitant studios, and numerous delays. The actor told Variety

They would call him ‘flamboyant’ in his description. I wouldn’t — he was just the coolest person. He could pull anything off.

Tatum’s vision for Gambit was a far cry from what the studios wanted. He wanted a film that was fun, stylish, and romantic, just like the character himself. Enter Ryan Reynolds. While Tatum struggled to bring Gambit to life, the Canadian star was on a mission to redeem Deadpool.

After a poorly received portrayal in X-Men Origins: Wolverine, Reynolds was determined to do the character right. His efforts paid off, leading to a hugely successful franchise. Reynolds’ backing of Tatum’s Gambit dream was what really made their friendship special.
