In a recent interview with i-D magazine, Bella Hadid discussed her issues with body image, mental health, and the industry’s reluctance to acknowledge her Palestinian heritage. The 25-year-old model claims that she developed unhealthy behaviors as a coping mechanism for her chronic anxiety during her adolescence.

Bella Hadid recently admitted to struggling with mental health issues at the start of her career. She revealed how difficult the lifestyle had gotten for her. She opened up about how she hadn’t anticipated this course for herself. Hadid was always critical about her appearance but loved to be behind the camera. Even though she was fond of photography, her signing with IMG Models at the age of seventeen changed everything for her. She used the interview as a medium to be more transparent about her life. She said,
“My truth, who I really am, and what I stand for, is going to be seen.”

Bella Hadid Comes Clean About Smoking as a Coping Mechanism in her Teens
Hadid revealed how her pre-teens are a blur as she was dealing with both anxiety and Lyme disease, a bloodborne illness that causes intense exhaustion.
“Growing up, I thought it was normal that I had this chronic anxiety and this disassociation, crying every day and not knowing who I was,” she said. “Whether it was eating disorders or smoking a pack of Marlboros since the age of fourteen, I’m like, ‘Oh, this is what all of the kids are doing’.” She refrains from using the word ‘self-medicating’. “I realized that maybe that was me trying to figure out why I felt that way. And in reality, all I needed was therapy,” she added.
The IMG Model Discusses her Struggles with Body Image
Hadid as a teen entered the profession but ended in a dark place due to unresolved issues. She dealt with body dysmorphia, and depression and was dissociative. The current supermodel fraternity also has been coming out to discuss their struggles. Body image seems to be an industry-wide issue. Being one of today’s supermodels at the age of twenty while yet experiencing a profound sense of unhappiness and melancholy was a bizarre dichotomy. As glamorous as the profession seems to be, Bella revealed some of its darker sides.
