Andrew Garfield portrayed the role of a Jesuit priest from the 17th century in a 2016 movie, Silence, and talked about his preparation for the character.

Directed by Martin Scorsese, the movie had Andrew Garfield who played the role of a Jesuit priests who travel to Japan in the 1600s. Andrew Garfield was recently on an episode of WTF With Marc Maron. While telling about how he prepared for the role, the actor revealed he starved himself of “sex and food” during the shooting. 

“I did a bunch of spiritual practices every day, I created new rituals, I was celibate for six months and I was fasting a lot. I had some pretty wild, trippy experiences from starving myself of sex and food at that time.”

The actor also expressed his views on method acting and misconceptions about the same. While expressing his views on method acting, The Amazing Spider-Man actor added, 

“People are still acting in that way, and it’s not about being an a–hole to everyone on set. It’s actually just about living truthfully under imagined circumstances and being really nice to the crew simultaneously and being a normal human being and being able to drop it when you need to and staying in it when you want to stay in it.”
