“I was encouraged by a few people”: Emma Watson Made Harry Potter Co-Star She Had a Crush on Open Up About the Same Addiction That Nearly Destroyed Johnny Depp
Harry Potter star Emma Watson aka Hermione had a crush on Tom Felton who played one of the main rivals Draco Malfoy in the franchise. The actor once revealed that his co-star helped him open up about his struggles.
Emma Watson almost fell in love with Tom Felton who co-starring in the blockbuster Harry Potter franchise. And what’s more surprising to know is that Felton, who played Draco Malfoy in the series, once revealed that his co-star Watson encouraged him to share his personal struggles in his memoir.
Emma Watson Encouraged Tom Felton to Address His Struggles
Tom Felton‘s memoir Beyond the Wand, is out, in which he opened up about the major difficulties that despite being an acclaimed actor did not leave him. In his memoir, the Harry Potter star addressed numerous issues especially his personal struggles with alcoholism, the same struggle that almost destroyed Johnny Depp.
In an interview with The Independent, Tom Felton spoke about his memoir and what he included in it. The Rise of the Planet of the Apes star revealed his and Emma Watson‘s close relationship which fans always wanted to turn into a love relationship. When talking about his addiction and the tough paths in Felton’s life, the actor revealed that Watson encouraged him to mention the full story in Beyond the Wand. He said:
“I was encouraged by a few people, Emma Watson specifically, to tell the whole story and not just sort of cherry-pick the fluffy bits, not just because it was cathartic for me. But also in the hope that sharing those parts of my story will help others that are maybe not going through the best time.”
Felton explained that his Harry Potter co-star was one of the individuals who encouraged him to address the entire story especially the difficult times of mental struggle, alcohol addiction, and rehab journey that despite being a successful actor, Tom Felton wasn’t free from.
Tom Felton Initially Wanted The Role of Harry Potter
Tom Felton in his memoir not only included the difficulties that he encountered but also mentioned some of the best stories related to his casting in Harry Potter. Initially, Felton auditioned for Daniel Radcliffe‘s role as he wished to be one of the main characters in the franchise. But surprisingly his cheeky attitude landed him in the role of Draco Malfoy which Felton thinks is the best role he could ever get. He wrote:
“While I initially auditioned for the role of Potter, Draco is the best role I could have got, because he’s a slimy git and so vastly different from who I am. He’s an only child with a huge sense of entitlement and crap parents.”
Despite being one of the main rivals of Harry Potter, Draco Malfoy also portrays a complex character that undergoes few character changes within the series. Felton mentioned that this character was completely contrasting to what he is as a human in real.
However, Tom Felton’s portrayal of Draco Malfoy who comes from a pure-blood wizarding family, was highly acclaimed, and eventually, it became the actor’s iconic role.
