“I was going through puberty”: Simu Liu’s Inability to Talk to Girls Made Him Take Up Singing as Marvel Star Releases His First EP
Acclaimed actor Simu Liu is arguably one of the most talented actors in Hollywood from an Asian heritage. The actor is incredibly commended for his work in Marvel’s Shang-Chi. However, little did fans know that in his teenage years, Liu had difficulty in talking to girls.
From switching careers to struggling to find roles, Chinese-Canadian actor Simu Liu has managed to turn life around. Recently, the actor revealed that while he was going through puberty, it was challenging for him to interact with the opposite gender, and to make it easy, Liu came up with the idea of learning to dance and sing which he thought might help him conversate with girls.
Simu Liu Started Singing Due To The Inability To Talk To Girls
The Barbie star rose to stardom after becoming the first-ever Chinese superhero in Marvel’s Shang-Chi. However, while promoting his recent and first EP titled Anxious-Avoidant, the Chinese-Canadian actor revealed that he struggled to interact with girls at an early age as he was going through puberty. In an interview with NME, Simu Liu humorously mentioned learning to dance and sing thinking it would help him talk to girls.
While recalling the time of his puberty and the challenges he found during his teenage, Kim’s Convenience star said:
“I grew up in Canada but I had some exposure to what was happening in Asia and there was a sense that to be an entertainer is to be multi-hyphenate. I wouldn’t be attempting music if I couldn’t do music.”
While Simu Liu was living in Canada with his parents, he thought that learning new skills would earn him attention and confidence. He added:
“My parents put me in piano [lessons] when I was eight years old and I naturally gravitated towards bands and orchestra. Singing came a little bit later because I was going through puberty and I had no idea how to talk to girls. I thought maybe if I taught myself how to sing and dance that would help in some way.”
The acclaimed actor shared that he learned music in his adolescence thinking that it would allow him to talk around girls. He then lightheartedly mentioned that even though it didn’t help him, music has played a significant role in his life.

The Legend of The Ten Rings star recently starred in this year; ‘s summer blockbuster Barbie, and earned commendation from fans for securing a humorous character in Greta Gerwig’s movie. In the same interview when asked about being an inspiration and role model for the Asian-American community, the actor said:
“It comes with a lot of pressure, it seems to be omnipresent. It focuses you. It’s easy to gain a lot of success and fame and then be like, “What now? I have no purpose.” For me, I’ve always been very aware of what work still needs to be done. For my personal success, while it’s been amazing and I’ll never take it for granted.”
Being an immigrant, it was initially challenging for Simu Liu to enter Hollywood and make his name under the rising stars, and is now lauded as an impeccable actor in the entertainment industry.
