The night before the Grammy Awards in 2009, Chris Brown, whom Rihanna still proudly refers to as her first love, assaulted the singer. The singer was featured on the cover of Vanity Fair’s November 2015 issue owing to her incredible success throughout the years. The Golden Globe winner opened up in one of her most honest interviews and recounted her traumatic assault experience. “For me, and anyone who has been a victim of domestic abuse, nobody wants to even remember it,” she said in her opening statement. No one even wants to acknowledge it. Therefore, to bring it up and mention it once, much less 200 times, is like saying, “I have to pay for it,” she further explained.

The 34-year-old singer says, “Well, I just never understood it, like how the victim gets punished over and over,” when asked whether she believes she’ll remain the face of domestic abuse or if that night in 2009 would ever leave her. Considering this, she admits that the subject is still important and states,

“I don’t want to say ‘get over it,’ because it’s a very serious thing that is still relevant; it’s still real. Many women and young girls are still going through it. a lot of young boys too. It’s not a subject to sweep under the rug.”

Nearly a decade has passed since the singer of Look at Me Now attacked Rihanna. Following the legalization of the physical assault case and subsequent media attention, Brown was given a five-year probationary term. But when the couple reconnected in 2012, she thought she could change him for the better, but as they say, some people are not meant to be together, and that’s exactly the case with this famous ex-couple.

Even after…But you know, you realize after a while that in that situation, you’re the enemy,” she continued. And while she claimed that he was not her enemy, she also noted that they were not friends and did not currently have a close relationship.
