 The 2023 MTV Video Music Awards were held at the Prudential Center in Newark, New Jersey, on September 12, 2023. It celebrated the 50th anniversary of hip-hop and awarded many famous personalities from the industry. However, who caught all the attention of fans was Selena Gomez.

The 31-year-old landed a leading role in several widely shared memes during the night’s 2023 MTV VMAs broadcast. She later made rounds on the internet as it was buzzing with her sour face. The actress did become one of the biggest memes of the night. When cameras captured the Only Murders in the Building star making a sour face as the nominees for best R&B were announced, especially when Chris Brown‘s name came.

Chloe Bailey and Brown’s How Does It Feel from the Chloe x Halle singer’s debut solo album In Pieces cut in the category, and as a clip of the pair’s music video rolled Brown’s name was announced. The Calm Down singer was seen scrunching up her face at his name before grinning and applauding for the other artists in the category.

As the internet started buzzing with the Single Soon performer’s reaction, she immediately took to her Instagram and vowed to avoid internet foolishness in the future. She wrote on her Instagram story,

“I will never be a meme again. I’d rather sit still than be dragged for being myself. Much love.”

Selena Gomez’s on-camera response to the singer’s name is probably due to the R&B singer’s 2009 attack on his then-girlfriend Rihanna before that year’s Grammy Awards. Brown was given five years of probation and domestic violence counseling after entering a guilty plea to a crime.
