Idris Elba was keen on playing Sam Nelson

Last summer during a conversation with Variety, the actor was asked about his return for season two to which he said that they’ll only return if the team can find the right storyline to share with the audience. He added,

“I’m open to that character coming back. I think if people were compelled to like the character, then I’m in. But it’s kind of like—he’s not a cop so what would be the acceptable Sam Nelson return? And if I’m honest, I’m not sure. I’d like that, but I just don’t want to put him on another hijack.”

Idris Elba in his conversation shared that he was always keen on playing Sam Nelson as he was a character, which is not necessarily an action hero but was in an action setting. He has a sort of vulnerability of a man who is ordinary and can make mistakes. The actor lastly added that he wanted Sam Nelson to be vulnerable and a bit like an unusual hero.
