“If they can figure a financial way to make it work”: Chris Pine is Hopeful for a Dungeons and Dragons Sequel After Original Movie Left Fans Stunned Upon Release
Chris Pine, along with Regé-Jean Page, Hugh Grant, and more, starred in 2023’s fantasy heist action-comedy movie Dungeon & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves, directed by Jonathan Goldstein and John Francis Daley. The movie is based on the tabletop role-playing game Dungeon & Dragons. The movie received a positive response from the audience and the critics for its performances, visual effects, humor, and story.
Despite receiving praise, the movie lucked out on performing at the box office and fell short of its break-even point. The movie premiered at the South by Southwest, and the response from the festival made studios believe that the movie could be a bigger hit than they anticipated but were disappointed with its underwhelming box office collection. However, Chris Pine is optimistic about the future of the movie.
Chris Pine keeping fingers crossed for Dungeons & Dragons’ sequel
According to Agents of Fandom’s X account, actor Chris Pine, who played Edgin Darvis in Dungeon & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves, is hopeful for a sequel. The actor appeared at the Superhero Comic Con, where he addressed the possibility of a sequel. He said,
I think there’s a really good chance that we’ll make another one. And if they can figure out a financial way to make it work, they’ll do it.
This is not the first time the actor has said that he’d like to reprise his role as Edgin Darvis. Back in 2023, during a conversation with Games Radar, while promoting his movie Wish, in which he voiced the villainous King Magnifico, the actor was asked about the future of the tabletop role-play game-inspired movie, and he said,
I’ve heard some rumors about it. But I don’t know anything yet. But I feel pretty confident that it may happen.
Pine said he’d be happy to return to his character. The Wonder Woman actor was highly appreciated for his performance in the movie. The directors of the movie had spoken to Variety in 2023, where they mentioned that Pine was eager to play Edgin Darvis to clean up his superhero image that stemmed from playing Captain Kirk in Star Trek movies. They said at the time,
What we love about Chris is that he’s hyper-aware of his image and wants to make himself look as bad as possible, almost to a fault. His character is the most casual player. He doesn’t bother to learn about the Bardic spells and would prefer to just hit people over the head with his lute.
The original trilogy of the movies directed by Courtney Solomon (first) and Gerry Lively (the next two) started with Dungeons & Dragons in 2000, which was a box office bomb, followed by 2005’s Dungeons & Dragons: Wrath of the Dragon God, which was direct-to-video. The last movie in the original trilogy, in the original trilogy, Dungeons & Dragons: The Book of Vile Darkness, was also released as a direct-to-video in 2012.
Chris Pine reveals Princess Diaries 2: Royal Engagement ‘changed his life’
Pine starred opposite Anne Hathaway in 2004’s Princess Diaries 2: Royal Engagement as Nicholas Devereaux, who tries to woo Princess Mia in her ancestral home country of Genovia. In his conversation with Sunday Sitdown with Willie Geist, Pine mentioned how much that role meant to him. Chris Pine said,
It was the height of summer, and I was getting off at Magnolia. I was on my little Verizon tiny little flip phone, my silver one, and I got a call from my agents that I booked a job. I pulled over onto the side of the freeway, and they said, ‘You’re getting paid $65,000’, and it was like they had just told me that I’d made $50 million. It was absolutely earth-shattering.
The actor continued to explain that he had an overdraft in his bank account, adding that it was like $400 over, and he was very close to asking his parents for money, and then he got that $65,000. Pine noted that he remembers that from that moment on, his life changed somehow.
However, he added that the money lasted no time at all, as it turned out to be $15,000 that he received. Pine added that he owed his parents the rent money, but the feeling was wild, and he’ll never forget that. Chris Pine is now regarded as one of the most talented actors in the industry who has carved his way to the top. He went on to star in movies like Wonder Woman, Star Trek, Don’t Worry, Darling, and more.
Dungeon & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves is streaming on Prime Video.
Princess Diaries 2: Royal Engagement can be streamed on Prime Video and Apple TV+ via VOD.
