The movie debuted at the 81st Venice International Film Festival, where it received praise, and Kidman won the Volpi Cup for Best Actress. In a recent interview, while promoting her movie, she also explained her viral AMC cinema ad.

In a cover story for GQ, actress Nicole Kidman acknowledged her AMC ad, which she filmed during the pandemic, urging people to get back to the movies. The ad was held up by film Twitter (now X) for its endearing strangeness. She said,

Heartbreak feels good in a place like this. But I’ll do anything for the cinema, so you can meme as much as you want.

The AMC ad wasn’t the first time Nicole Kidman became a meme. Back in 2017, during the Oscars, she was spotted clapping just with her palms. (Via The Independent)

Fans at the time compared her hands to flippers, and the moment went viral in no time. At the time, the actress shared in a radio interview that it would have been awkward if she didn’t clap, so that’s how she clapped. Speaking about the same, Kidman shared during the GQ interview,

I had a massive, heavy, borrowed ring on, and it was really painful, and I was scared of wrecking the jewelry. There’s always something behind the actual images that go out there, right?

While speaking with the publication about her upcoming movie, the actress acknowledged that in the post-Me Too era, the industry has struggled with showing s*x in movies.

But last year’s releases have showcased that it’s shifting. Upon being asked if she feels that s*x has a place on-screen, Kidman added,

I’m not a huge fan of massive blanket statements. No, you’re not going to want to sit there and see sex that’s exploitative. It’s got to be looked at and dissected, and it’s consent, and there are all those things around that. It is a huge part of who we are.

The actress shares during the filming that filmmaker Hailna Reijin, who has written and co-produced the movie as well, would hold her physically when Kidman felt too exposed. She noted that it’s a very deep thing to experience, and it’s like saying, ‘I trust you; please don’t hurt me.’ She described herself in the movie as ‘vulnerable.’

Nicole Kidman is willing to take on new challenges with Babygirl

Reese Witherspoon, who worked with Nicole Kidman in Big Little Lies, shares that Kidman is an incredibly well-read actress who understands how to match directors to material. She added during the interview with GQ,

She watches an incredible amount of emerging filmmakers’ work and is very discerning about who she wants to work with. She is always willing to take on new challenges, particularly roles that explore a unique expression of female identity.

Kidman mentioned she does not see a role as daring or risky, but now when she reads roles like the one in her upcoming movie; she just feels like she has to make it. The actress said it was the same with Birth, Eyes Wide Shut, and Dogville. She also added it’s why there are so few good films.

The actress noted that people don’t get to read such scripts or roles as they are either not financed, or they’re not found; they sit on shelves or people’s computers and don’t make their way into the world.

The director Halina Reijn also praised the actress by stating that seeing Kidman act for her was like an exorcism. Reijin added that Kidman goes beyond ego, sanity, and fear. Kidman’s co-star Harris Dickinson also noted that they were both scared by every scene they filmed.

Nicole Kidman with Babygirl wishes that she’s able to open the door on the subject and not be shamed, punished, or hurt because of it. She later added that Babygirl is also a lifeline in a way; it goes on to state that one can be loved for the deepest parts of who they are.

Babygirl comes out on December 25, 2024.
