“My wife got rid of about 500 of them”: Samuel L. Jackson on his Kangol collection
Samuel L. Jackson revealed that his wife LaTanya Richardson is tired of his Kangol collection while promoting his television series The Last Days of Ptolemy Grey on The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon in March 2022. He claimed to have a collection of almost 800 hats, almost half of which are still in existence.
Jackson told Fallon, “My wife got rid of about 500 of them. I’m down to 300.” On asking how his love for Kangol chats grew, the actor said that it sort of runs in the family, adding, “Oh, geez, [I started] when I stole my first one out of my grandfather’s closet. Long, long time ago.”
Samuel L. Jackson’s wife LaTanya Richardson said they decided on staying together
Richardson spoke to People magazine about their relationship and said, “In the beginning, we always said the most revolutionary thing that Black people could do was stay together, raise their children with the nucleus of having a father and a mother since everybody likes to pretend that that’s not the dynamic of the African American family. That it’s just children out here being raised by women, which we know is false,”
She went on to say that they decided to stick together despite everything to change that perception, adding that they had promised to work things out. LaTanya has a long list of theater, movie, and television credits. She was nominated for a Tony Award in 2014 for her performance as Lorraine Hansberry in the play A Raisin in the Sun. “I’m amazed at how busy we are in our seventh decade,” LaTanya told PEOPLE in 2022. “I’m grateful because I think of all the things that could be.”

Samuel L. Jackson and LaTanya Richardson have different versions of their proposal
In 2020, while making a joint appearance on The Graham Norton Show, the actor admitted that he cannot recall whether or how he asked his wife to marry him. His wife, however, chimed in with an explanation. She claimed that, despite her grandfather’s serious illness, they were already married so he could accompany her down the aisle. Richardson referred to it as semantical but Jackson insisted that it was romantic.
During a May 2023 appearance on The Jennifer Hudson Show, Jackson said that according to him, the story is that he came home one day and his wife already had the invitations printed and she gave him a stack and asked him to be there. He further said, “I was on drugs, and I probably didn’t know what the hell was going on at the time. So, she’s probably right!”
In 1999, LaTanya and her husband co-founded the nonprofit Samuel L. and LaTanya R. Jackson Foundation, which has given money to organizations supporting the arts, education, and health. The Jacksons contributed money to the National Museum of African American History and Culture as well. Richardson was the one who assisted her husband in entering rehab at the beginning of their marriage. For more than 30 years, Jackson has now been in recovery. He said that his wife gave him a chance to become the man he is supposed to be.
