“‘I’m not doing anything action”: Eddie Murphy Wants to Follow One Iconic Actor’s Career Path After Admitting Difficulties with Beverly Hills Cop 4’s Stunt Scenes
Eddie Murphy is bringing back his famous character Axel Foley in the new movie Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F. This is the fourth film in the popular comedy film series, and it’s sure to be a hit with fans of the previous installments.
The movie will be full of laughs and will see Murphy reunite with some of his old co-stars. However, the Hollywood star has spoken about the difficulties of doing stunts in the film at his age. Looking ahead, Murphy said he’d like to take on more serious roles with greater depth and meaning—the kind his idol is best known for.
Eddie Murphy Takes Cue from Iconic Actor After Facing Setbacks in Beverly Hills Cop 4’s Stunts
Eddie Murphy said that returning to the role of Axel Foley was a bit of a wake-up call for him. He admitted that he is no longer up for doing the stunts. “It felt like old man,” the actor told TODAY. “I did ‘Beverly Hills Cop’ when I was 21. And I’m 63 now.”
There is a funny scene in the movie where the director asks Murphy, “Can you come down with more urgency and faster?” To this, the 63-year-old refused with a “No,” and continued:
“I was like, ‘I’m not doing anything action. Don’t call me unless you’re offering me the same type of (expletive) you would offer Morgan Freeman.'”
No doubts, it’s Eddie Murphy being Eddie Murphy. Here, he made it clear he’s no longer interested in just any role. Instead, Murphy is setting his sights on projects with more depth and weight – similar to those offered to the respected actor Morgan Freeman.
This means Murphy is steering away from action movies and light comedies. He is seeking out those characters that really make people notice, much like the powerful ones the Freeman often plays. Looks like, the Brooklyn native is ready to surprise fans with performances that go beyond comedy and really show what he’s made of.
Eddie Murphy’s Family Cameos in Beverly Hills Cop’s Fourth Sequel
The father of ten, Eddie Murphy, is joined in the movie by a cameo from one of his daughters, Bria. She is Murphy’s first daughter with his then-wife, Nicole Mitchell. Bria makes a cameo appearance as a police officer who arrests her own father! Ed’s son-in-law also appears in the movie in a scene where he tases his character in the neck.
A number of stars from the original Beverly Hills Cop movies are also returning for the film. This includes John Ashton, Judge Reinhold, Paul Reiser, and Bronson Pinchot. There is even a scene that pays homage to a famous scene from the original movie where Foley sneaks into the back seat of a car.
The Trading Places actor said that he still enjoys playing Axel Foley because he is an “everyman” character that people can relate to. Foley is not a superhero, but he is a regular man who rises to the occasion. According to him, this is why people like the character so much.
Beverly Hills Cop 4 will be available on Netflix starting July 3rd.
