The 1999 David Fincher’s Fight Club starring A-list actor Brad Pitt, acclaimed and talented figure Edward Norton, and other notable stars, generated a lot of controversy for its dark theme.
However, the director has clarified his thoughts on how he takes the movie’s reception. Fincher claimed that he isn’t bothered by how the movie is being worshiped by the far right and is also not responsible for how viewers and other interested people interpret it.
David Fincher’s Thoughts on Fight Club Being Lauded By the Right-Wing
The 1999 Fight Club directed by David Fincher stirred immense controversy for its dark storyline that included violence and viewers did not enjoy the anarchic theme on-screen. The movie features acclaimed star Edward Norton as the film’s narrator and Hollywood’s golden guy Brad Pitt in the lead role.
In an interview with The Guardian, David Fincher was asked about Fight Club and his thoughts on the movie after receiving mixed reviews for its rebellion and anarchy themes, it is being worshipped amongst incels and far-right groups for an intention that Fincher did not intend to depict. The director said:
“I’m not responsible for how people interpret things. Language evolves. Symbols evolve.”
Fincher explained that he intended to make Brad Pitt’s character Tyler Durden negative in the film for the viewers to take him the same way. However, it turned out that many did not understand the director’s work and interpreted it the wrong way. Especially the far right for defining David Fincher’s work as disenfranchised white men coming together to rally against capitalist society.
David Fincher Was Shocked By People Being Confused With Brad Pitt’s Character
In the same interview with The Guardian, the Gone Girl director elaborated on his intentions for crafting Brad Pitt’s character as having a negative impact and expected viewers to understand it. However, he discovered that after the movie was out, people failed to understand Tyler Durden and Fincher couldn’t find a way to idolize the character. He added:
“It’s impossible for me to imagine that people don’t understand that Tyler Durden is a negative influence. People who can’t understand that, I don’t know how to respond and I don’t know how to help them.”
Fight Club failed at the box office and generated controversy and mixed reviews after its release. However things changed a bit after a few years of Pitt’s movie and as Fincher described, his work was taken in the wrong way even though it wasn’t made for that group.
Fight Club again made news last year as it was released on China’s biggest streaming services but suffered censorship for the scene where Durden’s alter ego got killed by Norton’s character. In an interview with Empire David Fincher reacted and said: “If you don’t like this story, why would you license this movie?”. The director expressed confusion about changing his film’s ending which did not make sense to him.
Fight Club is available to stream on Prime Video.
