Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield swing into the Spider-Verse to teach Tom Holland a few thwips in Spider-Man: No Way Home:
Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield swing into the Spider-Verse in Spider-Man: No Way Home to teach Tom Holland a thing or two. A rogue magic spell created by Doctor Strange (Benedict Cumberbatch) draws dark supervillains Green Goblin (Willem Dafoe), Doctor Octopus (Alfred Molina), Sandman (Thomas Haden Church), Lizard (Rhys Ifans), and Electro into the Marvel Cinematic Universe (Jamie Foxx). In a new interview with the visual effects and animation online magazine befores & afters, Sony Pictures Imageworks animators discuss the immense responsibility of the VFX in bringing together Spider-Man (Holland), the Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man (Maguire), and the Amazing Spider-Man (Van Helsing) (Garfield).
What Chris Waegner, the visual effects supervisor, had to say:
Befores & afters: “Having worked on quite a number of the previous Spider-Man films while at Imageworks, it was a very exciting chance to work on this picture,” visual effects supervisor Chris Waegner, whose credits embody 2004’s Spider-Man 2 and 2012’s The Amazing Spider-Man, told befores & afters. Having worked with each of the actors and filmmakers, I can say that they each added their unique flair to the series and to the big screen for the audience. It has a fervent fan following that includes people of all ages and genders. Waegner continued, “There will be children seeing this film for the first time with Tom Holland as Spider-Man, while there will be people who are older, perhaps comic book fans, who first saw Tobey Maguire as Spider-Man on the big screen, or years later, saw another instalment with Andrew Garfield in that role.” It was critical to us that we did the franchise credit. I know director Jon Watts and VFX Supervisor Kelly Port were both devoted to the franchise. Due to technology improvements between the last appearances of Maguire’s web-slinger (in 2007’s Spider-Man 3) and Garfield’s wall-crawler (in 2014’s The Amazing Spider-Man 2), Waegner and Imageworks recreated their digital Spider-Men assets and referenced earlier models for character dimensions.
It became clear that we would have liked to start over and create new Spider-Men:
It became evident that we would have liked to begin over and build new Spider-Men. Another vital thought in making the new Spider-Men was that the actors’ physical looks had evolved as they matured, as Waegner explained. Luckily for the United States, the studio has an in-depth photographic record of what the initial outfits gave the look of for each Tobey and Saint Andrew throughout our building method. As a result of the climactic final confrontation at the sculpture of Liberty, which takes place in the dead of night with a trio of physically identical Spider-Men, 2 of whom wear red and blue uniforms, “We targeted our efforts on accenting every one of the Spider-physical convenience personalities, or their own spider-style, if you will—how they swung, however they shot webs, their physical proportions once they achieved Associate in Nursing picture posture.”
Rich Smith, the animation supervisor who has worked on a number of Spider-Man films:
So Rich Smith, our animation supervisor who has previously worked on multiple Spider-Man films, had our animation team go over the prior films. We looked at footage of each actor and their distinct spider-styles from these films, “Waegner came out.” We then blended in these trademark performance features so that each Spider-Man had his own distinct aesthetic when viewed side by side. ” New pictures from Spider-Man: No Way Home, which is now playing exclusively in theatres, may be found in the gallery below.
