The sixth season premiered on December 19, 2024, and fans are thrilled with it, which introduced a new structure of flashbacks, which could be a setup for a prequel spinoff. Virgin River showrunner Patrick Sean Smith reveals the future of the show

In an interview with Deadline, Virgin River’s showrunner, Patrick Sean Smith, shares about the upcoming season of the show along with clarifying if season 7 is going to be the last. He shared,

No plans to wrap up the series anytime soon, as long as people keep coming back for it. We’re proud and happy to keep telling these stories.

The series was renewed for season 7 on 23rd October 2024, and talking to Tudum regarding the renewal, Sean Smith mentioned that there is a lot more to go for the characters on the show. He added that with six seasons, he just feels that they have just begun to see the lead characters function as a married couple, which is exciting.

The showrunner also noted that Season 7 is going to explore the honeymoon phase for Mel [Alexandra Breckenridge] and Jack [Martin Henderson] as they build their lives on the farm. He, however, didn’t forget to add that living on a farm comes with its own set of challenges. He mentioned,

I can’t imagine creating a scenario where you think Mel and Jack are going to break up. It forces you to dig a little bit deeper into, well, what other issues can they have in their relationship? Especially when you want to keep it through the romance lens.

Patrick Sean Smith went on to praise the actors for their wonderful and convincing performances. He also added that it’s just resting on emotional stakes as opposed to will they, won’t they? The upcoming season is also going to explore various other relationships on the show.

In speaking to Deadline, the showrunner noted that there is an overarching theme for Season 7 of the outside encroaching into Virgin River, which comes from a personal place for him. He added that he comes from a small town in Texas, and he’s seen the repercussions of a hospital being taken over by a network.

He noted he’d love to explore more as long as humanly possible because it feels real, noting that he feels that they have an opportunity to look at it in a way that other shows cannot.

Virgin River’s Alexandra Breckenridge talks about her character’s last-minute cold feet

Actress Alexandra Breckenridge plays the lead character of Mel on the show, who got married to Henderson’s Jack in season six.

In speaking to Deadline about her character spending time with Jack in the most romantic way, she explained that she went into season six with the deeper connection the two lead characters share. She said,

Their communication is so different now, and the way that Jack’s been able to open up to Mel is so different. They see each other on a deeper level, and I think that is what you can really build a relationship on. It felt like that was the most important stuff.

Asking about Mel’s cold feet, the actress shared that whatever happened to Mel’s father just a day before the wedding triggered all the loss she has experienced.

One of the reasons why she was pushing back Jack was because she didn’t want to go through any more loss again, and she was terrified to let someone in. Breckenridge added that it’s a real thing and a struggle.

She thought she had gotten over it, but all of it just came back to her. I think she also really wanted the clarity, and this is a fresh start with Jack when they get married. She wanted to be able to leave all of that behind, and he helped her see that.

The actress added that it was reassuring that Jack believes that whatever has happened to her is a part of who she is, and he simply loves her for her.

Alexandra Breckenridge added that the reassurance she got from Jack was so powerful, pointing out that he’s always there for her and has nothing but love for her.
