Altering one’s appearance to embody the character, is a huge aspect of being an actor. And it takes a while to get a look right. Hair, makeup, and costume artists come together to create the image that helps the actors bring characters to life. Sometimes things go wrong, and the final look ends up looking nothing like the character. Or at least as it happened with Hugh Jackman, ends up looking like someone entirely different.

Hugh Jackman is renowned for playing the superhero character Wolverine from the X-Men comics. The yellow suit, the hairstyle, and the aggression are some of the most iconic traits of the clawed mutant; which Jackman had to achieve in live-action.

It was imperative that Jackman get the appearance of Wolverine as much as possible because he famously was not the apt choice to play the clawed mutant; mainly due to the lack of physical resemblance. Interestingly, achieving the clawed mutant’s hairstyle proved to be tricky as Jackman apparently ended up looking more like Elvis Presley. It was while shooting the 2000 movie X-Men, that a crew member pointed out the flaw in his appearance as Logan. As the actor told in an interview (via The Free Library):

“To watch the first movie, my hair changes a lot because about three weeks into shooting, a crew member said, `Elvis is leaving the building.’

This was caught on by Bryan Singer, director of the film who then decided to stop shooting. As revealed by Jackman (via The Free Library):

“The director shut down shooting and said, `You’re right. It looks like Elvis.’”

The actor further adds (via The Free Library):

“I watch the first one and I see my hair – sometimes they’ve edited down so it’s almost flat.”

Clearly, becoming and being Wolverine has not been an easy road for the Canadian actor.

The actor, who has played Logan for over two decades now admitted that he is not fond of his character’s hairstyle. The disheveled look adds to Wolverine’s aggressive, combative form but the iconic hairstyle is not something that Jackman is a fan of. The actor got candid with Men’s Health:

“Weirdly, it looks okay on film and on that character. But imagine it in real life. It looks ridiculous, so ridiculous. You can wear a baseball cap with it… but really, there’s no way to style it. And then there’s the hair as well, which of course, looks ridiculous both in character and out of character.”

Whether the actor likes it or not, it is an important part of Wolverine’s look.

Wolverine will be making a comeback on the silver screen with Deadpool 3, which will be released on May 3, 2024.
