The X-Men: First Class director feels the need for a new Star Wars with a set of new actors who will play the iconic figures in the remake of the original movies. Matthew Vaughn claims that new actors in the franchise can be satisfying if they are cast in an appropriate way that does not affect the legacy of the original characters.

Matthew Vaughn Feels the Need For a Complete Reboot of the Star Wars Franchise

It has been over four decades since Star Wars has been compelling its fans with the iconic characters. However, Matthew Vaughn, who has landed on many successful projects like X-Men: First Class believes that the new generation needs new actors and it would be promising for both fans and the Star Wars franchise.

The King’s Man director also expressed his desire to collaborate with Luke Skywalker (Mark Hamill), Han Solo (Harrison Ford), and Darth Vader (voiced by James Earl Jones) from the original Star Wars movies. Vaughn on a recent episode of the Happy Sad Confused podcast said:

“That’d be fun, why not? Bond … you ask me who is going to play the next Wolverine, why are these characters so hallowed that, from 1977, you can’t redo it for a new audience? Star Wars is the Skywalker family.

The director stressed on recasting of actors including Hugh Jackman‘s Wolverine as it won’t affect the franchise if the movies are well crafted and only engage the new generation but also satisfy Star Wars enthusiasts. He added:

“And that’s where I think, they’ve gone wrong because they’ve forgotten … And they’ve done brilliantly in the TV [world], but it needs an epic new film and that’s what I would do.”

Matthew Vaughn explains that he will craft films in a manner that does not affect the legacy of the original characters and blends every significant element like a compelling storyline, outstanding cinematography, and engaging special effects that he felt were missing in some previous Star Wars movies.

Reboots are not that easy especially when Vaughn desires too many elements to be incorporated in new movies with new actors. So, the Layer Cake director likely won’t be getting an opportunity anytime soon to remake the original films as Lucasfilm’s current aim is to expand the Star Wars franchise with new characters and new movies rather than recreating the original films with new actors. In an interview with Vanity Fair, the president of Lucasfilm said:

“We also can’t go do something with Luke Skywalker that isn’t Mark Hamill, we’re not going to suddenly go try to do that.”

Kathleen Kennedy discussed the plans for Star Wars movies in the future following the negative reception to Solo: A Star Wars Story, to expand the franchise and introduce new characters. The president explained that Lucasfilm doesn’t feel the right time to remake the original movies and is focusing on the lessons they have taken from the past decade of exploring a galaxy far, far away.
