“It wasn’t even a cool story”: Emily Blunt Broke Her Nose While Training for Tom Cruise’s $367M Movie
Emily Blunt is one of the best actresses in Hollywood. She had her breakthrough in 2006 with lead roles in the BBC TV drama Gideon’s Daughter and the comedy-drama The Devil Wears Prada starring Meryl Streep and Anne Hathaway. She has won numerous accolades including a Golden Globe Award and a Screen Actors Guild Award.
Over the years, Emily Blunt has starred alongside several Hollywood A-listers such as Benicio del Toro, Chris Hemsworth, Matt Damon, and Amy Adams. In the sci-fi movie Edge of Tomorrow, she worked with action star Tom Cruise. Now, while Cruise is no stranger to doing his stunts, Blunt seemed fairly new to this realm. Consequently, she had a hard time filming the stunt scenes.
Emily Blunt Almost Broke Her Nose While Filming Edge of Tomorrow
Edge of Tomorrow, released in 2014, is directed by Doug Liman. The film follows the story of a public relations officer Major William Cage (Tom Cruise), and a sword-wielding hero Sergeant Rita Vrataski (Emily Blunt) who are tasked with bringing down aliens while being stuck in a time loop.
The movie was well-received by both critics and fans, thanks to Liman’s masterful filmmaking, the special effects, and not to mention Cruise and Blunt’s phenomenal performances. These performances cost the two actors a lot of hard work and even some injuries while filming the movie.
During the movie’s shooting, the Wild Mountain Thyme actress nearly broke her nose, and recounted the incident to People (via azcentral), saying:
“In my initiation to the action world, in stunt training, I almost broke my nose. It wasn’t even a cool story. I smacked myself in the face with my sword. Tom came into the trailer as I was sitting there with ice on my face and high-fived me and said, ‘Welcome to the club.’ I said, ‘Dude, I’m in so much pain.’ He said, ‘Yeah!'”
Tom Cruise has injured himself a couple of times due to his love for performing his stunts on his own. So, it might have been his way of encouraging Blunt to keep going.
Edge of Tomorrow Director Praised Emily Blunt
There is a first for everything for everyone. Emily Blunt had never done an action movie before and the fact that she was up against someone as good as Tom Cruise must not have been easy. Despite having a breakdown which the Top Gun actor helped her through even though his way of doing so was a little harsh, the actress did her best and managed to impress everyone with her performance.
In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Edge of Tomorrow director Doug Liman praised Blunt, saying:
“She’s [Emily] that rare person that maybe hasn’t existed since Katharine Hepburn, who has that much strength and humor and beauty and confidence and intelligence — it’s actually sort of unfair.”
Cruise also did not hold back his admiration for the actress as he wrote to EW via email: ”Emily is a very intelligent actress able to convey inherent strength and vulnerability at the same time.” Development of a sequel for this movie has not started yet, allegedly due to production setbacks or the Mission: Impossible star’s busy schedule.
