Fate Franchise constantly receives praise for being one of the best anime adaptations of a visual novel. The word “Fate” in the title is but an indicator that the story belongs in the same multiverse; there have been many anime in this franchise that make it difficult to understand which anime goes where.
While you can easily find watch guides online in many formats, and you can watch every single anime in the order that suits you, not all of these anime are created equal. Simply put, not all Fate anime are peak fiction. Here’s a detailed ranking of the major Fate adaptations based on their overall quality. Let’s dive in.
10. Fate/Stay Night Is a Failed Adaptation

Fate/Stay Night was released in 2006 and was the first adaptation of the visual novel with the same name. The reason it ranks this low is that it is often considered a total failure by the community.
The animation is bad even by 2006 standards, but the bigger issue is how it handles the tone. Scenes that were meant to feel tense or life-threatening in the visual novel get played for laughs instead, complete with random fanservice gags that undercut the stakes.
The only reason it even makes this list is that the source story is simply amazing, and it perfectly explores the character of Saber, who is considered, arguably, still the greatest female character of all time. To this day, many fans demand a remake of this anime.
Where to Watch (USA): Prime Video
9. Fate/Kaleid Liner Prisma Illya Centers on Magical Girls

This adaptation moves the focus from Emiya Shirou to his younger sister, Illya. The entire mechanic is twisted into a magical girl concept where, instead of summoning heroes from the past, Illya and others use Class Cards to summon the heroes’ powers into their own bodies.
Many fans skip this series because its tone and premise feel disconnected from the mainline Fate universe. However, this universe connects to another Fate universe in which Emiya Shirou ends the grail war in a single night, and his younger sister is Miyu.
Behind all the crazy comedy moments of this anime lies a darker storyline that is eventually touched upon with the movie Fate/kaleid liner Prisma Illya: Vow in the Snow. The entire reason this adaptation ranks this low is that you have to watch multiple seasons of magical girls before it gets any good.

8. Today’s Menu for the Emiya Family – The Slice of Life Spin-Off

This anime is the direct spin-off of the Fate/Stay Night storyline. However, instead of trying to kill each other, everyone is enjoying Emiya Shirou’s home-cooked meals and having fun together. This universe is perfect for you if you dislike the seriousness of the Fate franchise, or simply want to see something fun after the depressing storylines of Stay Night routes.
However, this anime ranks low because, unlike others, it is too repetitive. Furthermore, it requires a lot of understanding of the mainline anime to even understand the jokes or appreciate it.
Where to Watch (USA): Crunchyroll
7. Lord El-Melloi II’s Case Files Is an Amazing Mystery Anime

This anime is often missed by people just getting into the franchise as it doesn’t have the term “fate” in its name. However, the story of this anime is just as good and important as most others. It’s set a few years after the events of Fate/Zero, and the protagonist here is Waver Velvet, former master of Iskandar.
This anime is best if you actually want to see a different side of the world without the grail wars. Here, Waver is basically like Sherlock Holmes, solving mysteries wherever he goes. And since the anime itself is set in London, it works well with the detective vibe.
However, it ranks low because this anime does a poor job of explaining those very elements that it shows. It’s a good mystery anime, but don’t expect to suddenly understand the complex world of Fate by watching this.

6. Fate/Apocrypha Showed the True Scale of the Grail War

This is yet another unique take on the grail war itself. Instead of seven servants fighting each other, this anime has two sets of seven servants in a group that is fighting in groups. With that huge ensemble cast and a bunch of references from multiple Fate anime, this anime is full of fan service for hardcore fans.
However, that is also because it couldn’t climb this ranking any higher. Since there are so many characters, not everyone is properly explored. Some servants were only available for a few fights, and their entire background was hidden, leaving the viewer to either rely on a history lesson or read a book.
In fact, the animation of this anime is praised; it was actually amazing for the time this anime came out, and it offered many action scenes with amazing hype. However, the more modern adaptations got this anime beat in that aspect as well. Let’s look at the top five now.

5. Fate/Grand Order Reverses the Summoning Mechanic

While the other Fate anime are either adapted from a visual novel or a light novel, this one is adapted from a gacha game. Fate/Grand Order follows Ritsuka Fujimaru as he travels to different temporal singularities to collect grails so that the Earth can be saved. So, instead of summoning heroes, the protagonist is practically going to the past.
The highlight here is Fate/Grand Order: Absolute Demonic Front – Babylonia. This Anime is full of action scenes that would make you think it’s a movie as well, and it offers more insight into a key character who was mostly hated before this anime: Gilgamesh.
The only reason this anime couldn’t climb higher is that the later movies in this adaptation were quite underwhelming, as people originally loved it for Gilgamesh, who is not present in sequels.

4. Fate/Stay Night: Unlimited Blade Works Set the Foundation

Fate/Stay Night: Unlimited Blade Works is often the first introduction to the franchise for most fans. It is the adaptation of the second route in the Fate/Stay Night visual novel, and focuses more on Rin Tohsaka than Saber. The story is quite self-contained in two seasons, and it can be watched without any prior knowledge of the franchise.
However, that is not what makes this anime rank this high. It’s because every other episode is packed with amazing action sequences, chilling monologues of Gilgamesh and Kotomine Kirei, and a protagonist who is loved enough to be celebrated on the internet.
Where to Watch (USA): Crunchyroll
3. Fate/Strange Fake Is the Perfect Action Fate Anime
Fate/Strange Fake is the latest anime in the franchise, and that means that it has the best animations and fight choreography so far. The original story was written by the author of Baccano, which tells you that even with the large ensemble of characters, the story is not being compromised.
This anime made a name for itself with amazing combat sequences in every single episode, a bunch of references for long-time fans, a story that still maintains a big mystery, and cliffhangers that would make sure you keep waiting for the next season.
From the production standpoint, it is perfect and is one of the best anime you can binge on Crunchyroll right now. However, it couldn’t rank higher because it’s not the best anime to see if you don’t know much about the franchise. It was but a love letter for long-time fans.

2. Fate/Zero Is the Heaviest in Lore

Fate/Zero is actually the prequel story of the Fate/Stay Night routes. It follows Emiya Kiritsugu, the foster father of Emiya Shirou, as he takes part in the Grail War to make a better world according to his own ideals. In fact, the whole “I want to be a hero of justice” ideal that Shirou has is inherited from Kiritsugu. While this adaptation is not the most action-heavy, it perfectly shows what the entire world is about.
The anime itself starts with an episode full of monologue, where many elements are masterfully explained just through dialogue between characters and their actions. Furthermore, it also offers some of the most heartbreaking scenes in the franchise and dives really deep into the ideological differences between major characters.
Where to Watch (USA): Crunchyroll
1. Fate/Stay Night Movie: Heaven’s Feel Is the Perfect Fate Anime

Fate/Stay Night Movie: Heaven’s Feel is the pinnacle of this franchise. If you’re new to the franchise, chances are that you were drawn towards it after seeing a scene from this trilogy. Instead of sticking to the standard episodic structure, Ufotable adapted the final route of the visual novel into 3 movies. This storyline centers on Sakura, and honestly, it’s the most tragic route.
The animations and art make this movie eye candy, and the music by Yuki Kajiura fits perfectly in every single scene. Furthermore, this adaptation touches upon some of the darkest things that many other anime ignore. It is, without doubt, the best Fate anime in existence.
