Eagle-eyed Marvel fans might have been too excited to see John Krasinski as Mr. Fantastic to pay much mind to the intricate details of his costume. Superhero costumes can really make or break a character. And it is not a simple task to do the original source, i.e. the comics, justice while also keeping the vibes of the character in check.

In a book titled Doctor Strange in The Multiverse of Madness: The Art of The Movie, Ryan Meinerding, Marvel Studios’ Head of Visual Development, discussed the intricacies of costume design at length, especially in reference to Krasinski as Mr. Fantastic.

The Marvel Exec revealed one key detail about Krasinski’s suit as Mr. Fantastic, which is a blue and black piece with stripes and a Fantastic Four logo on the chest. As he said (via The Direct):

The intent of putting those extra stripes in there was to say that the black parts add structure to the costume and to his body, and the blue parts stretch.

Explaining the significance of those stripes on the suit, Meinerding said (via The Direct):

“Aesthetically, they’re meant to look a little more put together than some of our other teams of heroes. That’s just the notion of being on The Illuminati. There’s almost a heaviness to that team. So for Reed, I was trying to lean into something that felt like it was taking the design challenge as seriously as possible. It wasn’t supposed to necessarily be a throwback. It wasn’t supposed to feel nostalgic.”

The efforts put in by the costume designers showed. Fans loved the suit.

Ryan Meinerding explains at length the process of creating a look for a superhero. He reflects on the factors in play and how many things need to be considered. The executive says that when there is a superhero who has been on the screen before, the challenges only get bigger. As he said (via The Direct):

“Any time we get back into the characters that are from the very beginning, it ends up feeling like a tremendous responsibility. You have to get it right. You have to modernize it to a degree, but you also have to get something that is going to resonate with the fans and feel like the character.”

Krasinski’s ability to play both dramatic and comedic roles is something to marvel at. This is what makes him the right choice to play a character like Richards. However, it is saddening that as Marvel Studios gears up for a Fantastic Four reboot, it is unlikely that Krasinski will not be playing Reed Richards. But with the suspense Marvel is known to keep, anything can happen.
