“It’s baffling me”: Lion King South African Actor Left Bewildered By Meghan Markle Accusing Him of Comparing Her Royal Marriage With Nelson Mandela’s Freedom, Dismissed it as a ‘Non-Event’
Meghan Markle is a former American actress and a current member of the Royal British family. . She retired from acting after she married Prince Harry and became the Duchess of Sussex. The Duchess recently got called out by a well-respected South-African actor after she compared her wedding day to the day that Nelson Mandela regained freedom.
Meghan Markle made a False Claim about her Wedding Day
In a recent interview, Meghan Markle said that an unnamed South African actor praised her wedding day. She claimed that the actor was from the 2019 Lion King movie. She said, “When you married into [the royal family], we rejoiced in the streets the same we did when Mandela was freed from prison.” This was a pretty bold statement because the release of Nelson Mandela after being in prison for 27 years is arguably one of the most joyful days in the history of South Africa.
And to everyone’s surprise, Dr. John Kani, the only South African actor in the movie denied The Duchess’ claim.
Dr. John Kani Denied The Duchess’ Claim
Dr. John Kani was the only South African actor in the 2019 Lion King movie. The actor claimed that he has never even met The Duchess. “This seems like something of a faux pas by her,” he added. Dr. Kani further said that he did not even attend the London premiere of the movie. He directly went to Hollywood and then later to Paris as he was filming for some other movie there. The Captain America: Civil War actor speculated that it was probably a “misremembering on her side.”
Dr. Kani further added that her wedding did not have any ties to South Africa. He could not tell even the year or the month she was married. He continued, “For me, it is a non-event, the whole thing.”
It was most probably a mix-up on The Duchess’ part. But, Dr. John Kani was deeply offended by the comparison of a modern-day wedding to the release of Nelson Mandela from prison.
