“It’s just so f***ing good”: Maika Monroe Promises the Upcoming Sequel to Her Top-rated Horror Film is Going to Be “Bigger and darker”
Maika Monroe, the actress who rose to fame with her role in a top-rated horror film, has recently given an update on the status of the much-anticipated sequel. She is widely known for her performances in thrillers and horror films and has been in the industry for over a decade.
Upon its release in 2014, Monroe’s movie It Follows not only achieved critical and commercial success but also went on to be labeled a modern horror classic. This successfully established her as a ‘scream queen’ for her spine-chilling performance. Luckily for fans, the movie is getting a sequel and despite remaining extremely tight-lipped about it, the actress has given a little something for fans to look forward to.
Maika Monroe Promises It Follows Sequel Will Be “Bigger and darker”
Maika Monroe made her film debut with the drama At Any Price in 2012. She went on to star in movies like the crime film The Bling Ring, the drama film Labor Day, and the psychological thriller film The Guest. Then came the horror film It Follows, which turned out to be her breakout project.
For those unversed, directed by David Robert Mitchell, the horror film focuses on a young woman named Jay Height, who after a seemingly innocent sexual encounter with her boyfriend Hugh, finds herself being relentlessly pursued by a mysterious, supernatural entity. It earned $23.2 million against a budget of $2 million (via The Numbers).
In October 2023, a sequel named They Follow was announced (via Variety). While Monroe is known to keep shut about the details of her upcoming projects, she has opened up a little about the sequel in an interview with Collider:
I mean, at first I’m like, “Oh, a sequel? Where are we going to go here?” And I read it, and it’s just so fucking good. It’s so good. I’m so excited. I think where you’ll meet Jay at this point is maybe not what’s expected, but it’s so cool. It’s just, of course, as everyone says for sequels, literally, though, is just bigger and darker and more f**ked up. Reading it was the craziest thing ever.
Monroe also said that she knew that Mitchell would not do another sequel if it was not worth it. She claimed that the director knew what he wanted to do and wanted to make.
The Longlegs Actress Claims The Movie Will Be Exciting and Challenging
Maika Monroe did not reveal any more details about the movie but did not refrain from expressing her own excitement about it. She added:
I am so excited for this role. It’s been a long time since I’ve been this excited to delve into something. There’s a lot there to play with, and I think it’s going to be incredibly challenging, for sure, but so fulfilling. Working with David, I can’t wait.
The sequel has not begun filming according to what the actress has revealed. However, whatever she has said so far about the movie sounds pretty exciting.
