“It’s like he’s naked”: Daniel Craig Left in Disbelief After Seeing Fans Going Crazy for Chris Evans’ Sweater
The 2019 film Glass Onion: Knives Out, written and directed by Rian Johnson, stars actor Daniel Craig, better known as James Bond, and Chris Evans, better known as Captain America. Johnson got the idea for the film from his interest in the big-screen movie adaptations of author Agatha Christie’s stories.
The film had its world premiere at the 44th Toronto International Film Festival in September, followed by a theatrical release in November. Both reviewers and viewers gave the film high marks. The American Film Institute and National Board of Review chose Glass Onion: Knives Out as one of the year’s top movies. Over a $40 million budget, the film’s global box office receipts exceeded $311.9 million. Daniel Craig’s response to Chris Evans’ trending sweater, though, is what’s intriguing. Let’s learn more.

Daniel Craig talks about Chris Evans’ cream cable-knit sweater
James Bond fame actor Daniel Craig portrayed the character of Detective Benoit Blanc in 2019’s successful movie Glass Onion: Knives Out alongside a cast that included Chris Evans, Ana de Armas, Jamie Lee Curtis, Don Johnson, Katherine Langford, Michael Shannon, Christopher Plummer etc.
The actor reprised his role as Detective Benoit Blanc for the 2022 sequel Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery and during an interview with BBC Radio 1 via EW ahead of the movie’s release, recalled that he didn’t fully understand how people online went into a frenzy about Chris Evans’ cable-knit sweater in the 2019 movie.
He said, “It’s the bit that goes over my head, that. I don’t understand. It’s like, so Chris Evans is wearing a jumper. It’s like he’s naked — or at least naked from the sort of waist down — wearing a jumper. I’m like, ‘He’s just wearing a jumper.'”
The interviewer had teased the actor that it was certainly one way to make a living Craig said that sure it’s a living and Evans does it well, adding that he wears the sweater and wears it beautifully.
Martin Campbell admits a concern he had regarding Daniel Craig
In an interview with Express UK via Variety, Casino Royale director Martin Campbell shared that initially when they were finalizing the actor who was going to replace Pierce Brosnan as 007 and Daniel Craig’s name was being circulated around, he was concerned that the actor wasn’t sexy enough to play James Bond on-screen. He said,
“My only reticence with Daniel…he was really a superb actor, there’s no doubt about that. It was the fact that, with people like Sean Connery, Roger Moore and Pierce Brosnan, they were all traditional-looking Bonds. All handsome guys, all sexy, all very attractive to women and so forth. Daniel was obviously tougher and rugged, but he wasn’t a traditional handsome guy. So I just thought about that for a minute and apart from that, absolutely it was always him.”
The director also revealed that along with Craig there were about eight actors who were in contention to become the next James Bond, noting that it’s very democratic as he, along with the producers, casting director, etc., sat down and went through the eight actors that were in the role. He further added,
“You put your hand up as you talk through each person and, ultimately, everybody has to be unanimous in their decision, if you see what I mean.”
Campbell noted that Henry Cavill was considered the next James Bond back then and he had a great audition, but he seemed a little young at the time and thus he was turned down and Craig was picked.
Daniel Craig’s casting as James Bond received massive backlash
Back in 2021, longtime James Bond casting director Debbie McWilliams revealed to EW that she felt sorry for Daniel Craig, who replaced Pierce Brosnan as the next 007 in the James Bond franchise, after his casting led to extreme blowback from the media who believed that the actor did not fit in the part. She said at the time,
“It was unbelievably negative, I have to say. The press response was awful and I felt so sorry for him, but in a funny kind of a way I think it almost spurred him on to do his damndest to prove everybody wrong. The whole way through the film, stuff would come out about [how] he couldn’t walk and talk, he couldn’t run, he couldn’t drive a car properly, so much stuff which was completely and utterly untrue.”
McWilliams said that the actor acted professionally, kept his head down and did his job and when the movie came out the reactions from the media changed and they liked him after all. The actor bid his character adieu after 2021’s No Time to Die and while there are so many names popping up for the potential James Bond, no one has been finalized as of now.
