“It’s never been a goal”: Tom Cruise Stepped Back From Industry, Returned Three Prestigious Awards in Protest
Tom Cruise, lauded for his exceptional acting skills and performing flawless stunts, made his goal lucid in the industry. The Mission: Impossible star revealed that he doesn’t engage in filmmaking to receive accolades.
From earning a fanbase worldwide to landing on one of the most successful franchises, Tom Cruise has garnered almost everything except an Academy Award. However, it might be quite intriguing for many to know that despite being an unparalleled actor in the film industry, Cruise is significantly less bothered about it, and without any delay, returned three of his prestigious accolades.
Tom Cruise Took a Bold Step: Returned His Three Notable Awards
Tom Cruise never steps back when it comes to fair protests. the actor once staunchly supported the protest against the controversy that surrounded the lack of diversity within the HFPA‘s membership. The War of the Worlds actor expressed his disappointment with the organization for lacking diversity and ignoring people from diverse races and backgrounds.
To validate his legitimate concern over the unfair practices, for which HFPA received immense backlash over not treating people fairly and asking unwanted questions that were believed to be disrespectful, Tom Cruise according to Variety did not hesitate to return his three Golden Globe Awards which he earned for Born on the Fourth of July (best actor, drama), Jerry Maguire (best actor, comedy or musical), and Magnolia each.
The actor once revealed that there were individuals who tried to persuade him to take on roles that would earn him an Oscar, but Cruise never felt the need to earn and make them a huge goal in his career. According to the Irish Examiner, The Mummy star said:
“I didn’t grow up watching the Oscars, so it’s never been a goal, I wanted to act. People have tried to get me to do a role by saying, ‘This is your Oscar.’ That means nothing to me.”
Tom Cruise claimed that winning the Oscars was never his goal and this is why he fearlessly returned three of his Golden Globe Awards to make his aim and thoughts crystal clear in the vast film industry. The actor landed Oscars nominations for the identical trio of the films he received his Golden Globes.
Tom Cruise Skipped The 2023 Academy Awards
Despite Tom Cruise’s movie Top Gun: Maverick being well-received by the audience and was up for six honors including Best Picture, the actor did not attend this year’s Academy Awards. The Knight and Day star cited a busy shooting schedule as he’s currently filming Mission: Impossible 8 overseas in which Cruise is joined by Emmy winner Hannah Waddingham.
Mission: Impossible 8’s writer-director Christopher McQuarrie took to his Instagram to share the news of Waddingham joining Mission: Impossible to star alongside Tom Cruise. Mission Impossible: 8 which is also known as the second part of Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning has been in the works since July, long before Mission: Impossible- Dead Reckoning‘s July 2023 release date.
