“It’s never gonna happen”: Daredevil Born Again Star Charlie Cox Went Through The Same Emotions as Ryan Reynolds Before Marvel Changed His Fate Forever
- Charlie Cox upon returning as Daredevil for Daredevil: Born Again.
- Cox was not ready to say goodbye to Matt Murdock when Netflix canceled Daredevil.
- Ryan Reynolds did not know if he'd return as Deadpool.
Charlie Cox is widely known for portraying the character of Matt Murdock, a.k.a., Daredevil in the Daredevil, which premiered from 2015 to 2018 on Netflix. The actor’s performance as Daredevil impressed the audience, but the television series ended abruptly. In 2021, it was announced that the actor would once again reprise his character for MCU productions.
Cox is now part of Marvel Televisions’ upcoming action-adventure crime drama Daredevil: Born Again, in which he once again reprises his role as Matt Murdock. Daredevil: Born Again serves as the second series, centered around the character and is one of the highly anticipated series from MCU. The actor shared how he feels about returning as a fan-favorite character, which is something he shares in common with Ryan Reynolds.
Charlie Cox says returning as Daredevil for Daredevil: Born Again feels ‘surreal’
At San Diego Comic-Con 2024, Marvel President Kevin Feige confirmed at Hall H that Charlie Cox will return as Daredevil along with Vincent D’Onofrio as Kingpin for the upcoming Daredevil: Born Again series (via Yahoo!). The television series is set to premiere on Disney+ in the spring of 2025 and includes 18 episodes. During a recent appearance on The Official Marvel Podcast, the actor shared,
During the time that the show wasn’t on, I was convinced it was over like we moved on, and Vincent would call me and say no, no, trust me, they’re going to bring it back, and I’d get off the phone and think, poor guy’s delusion like it’s never going to happen, so it’s pretty surreal.
The actor continued to share that it’s been four years since they wrapped the last season of the previous iteration (Daredevil on Netflix), which is pretty surreal to him. Cox appeared as the devil in Tom Holland’s Spider-Man: No Way Home and later in the final episode of She-Hulk: Attorney at Law.
Cox back in 2018 shared with EW when Netflix canceled Daredevil that a lot of them expected to keep the show going, adding that they felt like they had a lot of stories to tell. He noted that he was very saddened by the news of the show being canceled. He added at the time,
These characters mean a lot of people. It’s weird to think there’s a chance I won’t be playing Matt Murdock ever again. That’s a bizarre feeling because that character has been such a huge part of my life for the last four and a half years.
Charlie Cox described playing Daredevil as one of the most incredible jobs for him, adding it’s so fun to do it, especially with all the stunts and the fight choreography. The plot of Daredevil: Born Again remains under wraps; it is known that the series will be a continuation of storylines established in the Marvel Spotlight series Echo, along with plotlines from Netflix’s Daredevil series.
Just like Charlie Cox, Ryan Reynolds did expect to return as Deadpool in the MCU
Ryan Reynolds’ Deadpool & Wolverine is smashing records at the box office, but there was a time when the marketing genius actor assumed that his days as Deadpool were over.
During an exclusive interview with EW, it was reported that after Disney purchased Fox in 2019, which included the rights to X-Men characters and Deadpool, Reynolds believed that it was over for Deadpool. Reynolds said,
I didn’t know if I’d ever be playing Deadpool again. It’s not something I would’ve said necessarily publicly, but I didn’t know how a character like that would fit into the world of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
But Disney CEO Bob Iger announced that Reynolds’ Deadpool would be integrated with the MCU and retained its’ R-rating for the recently released movie. According to THR, the Iger noted at the time that Deadpool has been and will be Marvel-branded, but they think that there might be an opportunity for a Marvel-R brand for something like Deadpool.
Now, Deadpool & Wolverine recently released with Reynolds and Jackman officially making an entry in the MCU and received positive comments from the audience and critics. Kevin Feige had described Reynolds as an idea machine who pitched different approaches to his character for the third installment. Reynolds has mentioned in various interviews that he has never felt freer than when he is playing Deadpool.
The Canadian actor’s efforts brought back Wolverine on-screen after seven long years, along with various actors from X-Men films and prior Marvel productions who returned to say goodbye to Fox’s Marvel movie.
Deadpool & Wolverine is playing in cinemas.
