“It’s really intimidating”: Ahsoka Star Natasha Liu Bordizzo Delved into the Japanese Martial Arts for Her Role Despite Already Being a Black Belt in Taekwondo
In a recent interview with Star Wars, actor Natasha Liu Bordizzo talked about her friendship and training experiences with friend and co-actor, Ivanna Sakhno. The two are both newcomers to the Star Wars television series, Ahsoka.
Bordizzo, playing ‘Sabine Wren,’ mentioned that she and Sakhno got to know each other while training for the fight sequences. Ivanna Sakhno, who plays ‘Shin Hati,’ added that their stunt coordinator, Ming Qiu, taught them “focus and dedication to the craft and lightsaber combat.”
After wrapping up their work for the series, Ivanna made a Sabhine name bracelet for herself and her co-star. The newcomers in the Star Wars universe became real-life friends, and Natasha claimed that she “loved working with Ivanna” very much.
Natasha Liu Bordizzo Learned Taekwondo When She Was 8.
The Greatest Showman star has been trained in Taekwondo since she was 8 years old and earned a black belt. She is also trained in martial arts throughout her 8-year-long career. While working on Ahsoka, Bordizzo learned multiple Japanese Samurai forms, something she had never done before.
Hence, while Bordizzo’s co-star never trained in martial arts before, her previous projects did have requirements related to gymnastics-style stunts.
While commenting on her co-actor’s experience on action, Bordizzo said “Ivanna hadn’t really done martial arts before.” She added that she was proud of how Sakhno just rose to the challenge and “all the bumps and bruises that come with that.” She said, “If you’re not used to that kind of combat, it’s really intimidating.”

The plot revolves around ‘Ahsoka Tano,’ played by Rosario Dawson, who investigates the incoming threat to the galaxy after the fall of the Galactic Empire.
‘Sabine Wren,’ played by Natasha, is a Mandalorian warrior and a graffiti artist. She is a former bounty hunter and pupil of Ahsoka’s, with expertise in weapons and explosives. Similarly, ‘Shin Hati,’ played by Ivanna, is a Jedi working with the Dark whose aim is to hunt down Ahsoka.

Natasha Liu Bordizzo debuted in 2016 American-Chinese Wuxia(meaning ‘martial heroes’) film Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon: Sword of Destiny, directed by Yuen Woo-ping and written by John Fusco for Netflix. The film was adapted from Wang Dulu’s novel, Iron Knight, Silver Vase.
In 2017, she appeared in a musical film by Michael Gracey, The Greatest Showman, followed by her appearance in Hotel Mumbai(2018), based on the Taj Hotel attacks in 2008. She played an Australian tourist and the attack victim in the survivor thriller.
Bordizzo’s massive project in her career is Ahsoka, released this year, which gave her worldwide recognition as the audience was familiar with her character in the franchise. The actor delivered a memorable performance, especially in the action sequences.
