“It’s such a big f***king deal”: Better Call Saul Star Bob Odenkirk Wants to Win an Emmy at Any Cost
Better Call Saul, starring Bob Odenkirk, has received its final seven nominations for the 75th Primetime Emmy Awards, which makes the lead actor incredibly happy. The popular program has received 55 Emmy nominations since its debut in 2015. The series was the highest-rated scripted series to debut on basic cable at the time of its premiere.
Vince Gilligan and Peter Gould for AMC created Better Call Saul as a spin-off to the popular series Breaking Bad. The show acts as both a prequel and a sequel to the Bryan Cranston starter series. Since the show’s premiere in 2015, reviews have been overwhelmingly positive, with particular praise for the acting, the writing of the storyline and the characters, the direction, and the cinematography. Fans of Breaking Bad call the show a ‘worthy’ successor.

Bob Odenkrik’s wish for Better Call Saul to earn an Emmy
Actor Bob Odenkirk, who plays Jimmy McGill a.k.a. Saul Goodman on the show, recently during an interview with Vulture, expressed how grateful and happy he feels that the show has received seven nominations for the 2023 Emmys, which brings their total to 55 nominations till now.
He, however, did mention that it would be great if the show won an Emmy. He said that he understands what people are not going to understand, but when they say being nominated is a win in itself. But he thinks about how more than ever, in the history of television, being nominated in a world where there are this many great shows, is a massive win.
Odenkirk continued,
“But, really, it’s such a big f***ing deal. It was our final season. We know we left it on the field, everything we had, and I’m so proud. That last episode, the way these guys and women who wrote the show dug in and twisted these characters inside out was just masterful. This is an acknowledgment that you saw it and noticed it, and that’s — it’s everything.”
The actor, however, added that because they have never won an Emmy, that adds to a feeling of maybe they can pull one down before they are no longer in the run, noting that it would be nice to win the award. He said it does not matter who wins, but it would mean a lot to everyone who has worked on the show to see their hard work and dedication being rewarded and celebrated.
Bob Odenkirk talks about his time on The Bear
The actor, who appeared on the hit culinary drama The Bear as Uncle Lee in a guest appearance, shared during an interview with Deadline that being a part of the show was his greatest experience since Better Call Saul. He said,
“Everybody was there to kick ass, to play. Everyone respected each other, every one of those actors, and [creator] Chris Storer runs a set that allows for freedom to discover, and invent, and bring things to life.”
Odenkirk did not hold himself back from talking about the star of the show, Jeremy Allen White, who plays chef Carmy, and said that he just sets a tone of professionalism and respect for everyone and it’s a great thing. He noted,
“Our greatest dream is that everybody else in the scene looks f*cking awesome, and that was just such a joy to do.”
Other than Odenkirk, there is one more actor who appears on the show in flashbacks but has a great impact on the show; Jon Bernthal, who recently spoke to Variety about his experience working with Odenkirk. He said,
“I’m such a huge fan of his. I thought it was just such a perfect choice. He was so down to come at me, and vice versa! When you have an environment like that, everyone is willing to be a little bit dangerous, because there’s so much trust. There’s so much love and everybody’s so dedicated.”

Bob Odenkirk is up against some steep competition
With nominations announced and Bob Odenkirk expressing that he feels extremely grateful for them, it cannot be looked over that it’s going to be a tough competition for the actor to win under Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series category this year.
The actor is nominated against three Succession actors, The Last of Us’ Pedro Pascal, and The Old Man’s Jeff Bridges, which is going to make the competition tough. Actress Rhea Seehorn is up against The White Lotus’ actresses, The Crown’s Elizabeth Debicki, and Succession’s J. Smith-Cameron under the category of Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Drama Series.
Additionally, up for awards are Better Call Saul‘s two episodes for Outstanding Writing for a Drama Series, Outstanding Drama Series, Outstanding Picture Editing for a Drama Series, Outstanding Sound Mixing for a Comedy or Drama Series, and Outstanding Drama Series.
