“Is the bird coming back?”: Twitter HQ Takes Down X Sign after Elon Musk’s Rebranding Attempt Ends in a Herculean Failure
It wasn’t so long ago that business magnate and investor Elon Musk changed the icon for the social media platform Twitter. On July 24, the icon that had a white bird with a blue background was replaced by a white X against a black background. X users were pretty unimpressed by this move and demanded to have the previous icon back.
Elon Musk didn’t seem to be satisfied with just changing the icon, so he also erected a gigantic “X” logo on top of the Twitter headquarters building in San Francisco. This only resulted in more backlash as the size of the logo wasn’t any of the San Francisco residents’ business, but the stark white brightness was certainly interfering with their business, and they were stoic about it.

Elon Musk’s Reasoning for Changing the Icon
Last year, Elon Musk bought Twitter for $44 billion, and in April 2023, changed the company’s name from Twitter Inc. to X Corp. due to his obsession with the letter that has resulted in him owning the company SpaceX and nicknaming his son X. His reasoning for recently changing the icon to X was to “embody the imperfections in us all that makes us unique.” That only seemed to be a cover up as on July 25, he tweeted:
“The Twitter name made sense when it was just 140-character messages going back and forth – like birds tweeting – but now you can post almost anything, including several hours of video. In the months to come, we will add comprehensive communications and the ability to conduct your entire financial world.”

Musk also wrote that his plans include the total eradication of Twitter’s name and eventually bidding farewell to the iconic bird. Even the web address that was once twitter.com was switched to x.com which led to the onslaught of a lot of meme materials on the app itself. In October 2022, Elon Musk had said that him buying Twitter was an attempt at making X “an everything app” similar to the WeChat app of China.
The Glowing “X” Logo Had to Be Brought Down
A Reuters report stated that the city’s building inspection department had registered 24 complaints against the bright “X” logo. Recently, the department revealed that the sign was brought down and also that the owner of the property will be fined. X users are overjoyed to learn this news and are now asking “Is the bird coming back?”

The big “X” logo that was erected atop the company X’s headquarters located at Market Street, San Francisco was criticized by the city’s residents and officials as the people living close to the structure struggled due to the intrusive nature of the light being emitted from the sign. However, Elon Musk was reluctant to switch the company’s headquarters.
