Rooney Mara Opened Up About Sexism in Hollywood
In a candid interview with The Guardian, actress Rooney Mara has opened up about the issues of sexism in Hollywood. Mara revealed that almost all the time there was a huge pay gap between her and her male co-actor which left her more than frustrated.
Not only this Rooney Mara also said that apart from the pay there were a lot of other things that she found unfair. She said that many times on the set she was called horrible things. Talking about this Mara said to The Guardian
“I’ve been called horrible things. If a man was acting in the same way that I was acting, it would just be considered normal. To me, that’s the thing I find so frustrating is calling women spoiled brats and b—-es. We just want to have a voice in our life, and I don’t think that’s anything that shouldn’t be encouraged in any human.”
She also revealed that this often happens with any female actor who tries to voice out her opinion on the set. This statement by Mara has indeed sparked discussion on this topic in the industry with the hopes of making some difference.
The Issue of Gender Pay Gap and Sexism in Hollywood
From the 1980s to 2023, the disparity between male and female actors in Hollywood is surprisingly the same, despite the progressive nature of today’s society. As reported by The Guardian even today a male actor is paid $1 million more than his female co-star.
Not only these other reports have highlighted that sexism and gender pay gap issues in Hollywood are up by 45%. On the other hand, average male actors earned $57.4 million whereas female actors only earned $21.8 million. This data shows that the gender pay difference has only increased to 38% rather than any improvement.

Many female actors have time and again started conversations on this topic highlighting these prevailing issues in Hollywood. Talking about this The Hunger Games star Jennifer Lawrence once said to CNBC “It doesn’t matter how much I do. “I’m still not going to get paid as much as that guy, because of my vagina?”
Further Talking about this Lawrence said,
“I’m extremely fortunate and happy with my deal. But in other situations, what I have seen — and I’m sure other women in the workforce have seen as well — is that it’s extremely uncomfortable to inquire about equal pay. And if you do question something that appears unequal, you’re told it’s not gender disparity, but they can’t tell you what exactly it is.”
This highlights the darker side of the entertainment industry and if anything, one can only hope for some improvement in the near future.
