American actor and filmmaker, Josh Radnor, clearly earned the love of fans with his role as Ted Mosby in the sitcom, How I Met Your Mother. The sitcom was created by Craig Thomas and Carter Bays for CBS and remains a favorite among fans to date.
It wasn’t just Josh Radnor who found a breakthrough with the help of the show. His co-star, Cobie Smulders, also earned worldwide fame for her role as Robin Scherbatsky in the sitcom. It was the rain scene in the first season that was not only big for Ted and Robin, but also for Josh Radnor.
Josh Radnor’s Revelation About the How I Met Your Mother Scene That Was a Big Moment for Ted and Robin
Directed by Pamela Fryman, How I Met Your Mother premiered in 2005. The show was a critical hit and came to an end in March 2014 after 9 seasons. Besides Radnor and Smulders, it features amazing actors like Neil Patrick Harris, Alyson Hannigan, Jason Segel, and many more. For Radnor and Smulders, one of the scenes from the first season holds a very special value.
The final episode of the first season has a scene where Ted (played by Radnor) wills the rain to fall while dancing and shouting outside Robin’s window on a New York street. He wants it to rain so that Robin’s camping trip gets canceled. His blind optimism wins and it does begin to rain, which convinces Robin to give their relationship a chance.
That moment is not only a pivotal moment for the characters’ relationship, but also for Radnor who realized that he had made it. Alluding to it in an interview at PaleyFest (via The Paley Center for Media), he said:
It was like a Stanley Kowalski or something moment and I felt like I like I’m from Ohio and like like I really feel like I have made it in show business.
Radnor was very excited by the sudden realization that he was able to make it that far, and hence that shooting moment is something that he will probably cherish for the rest of his life.
The Tony-nominated Actor Has Advised Fans to Move On from the Sitcom
How I Met Your Mother is a show that Radnor will forever be grateful for. His role of Ted in the show became so popular that he has become synonymous with the character, to the point that many identify him as Ted even in real life. However, the 50-year-old actor himself sometimes suggests the fans move on from the show, and for good reason.
Although Radnor worked in films like Happythankyoumoreplease and Liberal Arts while being a part of How I Met Your Mother from 2005 to 2014, people mostly acknowledge him as Ted only. Some fans’ obsession with the show has led to the actor advising them against watching his own show. In an interview with GQ, he said:
People will still come up to me and say, ‘I just watched the series for the eighth time, all the way through.’ And I’m like, ‘That’s too much. You’ve gotta move on.’
Well, there is no real definition of ‘too much’ when it comes to someone or something one loves, and in this case, it happens to this incredible show and its protagonist Ted Mosby. No wonder Radnor is this proud and grateful for being a part of it.
How I Met Your Mother is available for streaming on Netflix.
