James Gunn Giving Zoey Deutch a Role in the DCU She Once Came Close to Will Finally Do Justice to Beloved Comic Character
- James Gunn could do justice to this DC character by casting Zoey Deutch as her.
- Deutch auditioned for the role a couple of years ago, and would love to do something like it.
- The Set It Up actress manifested her Our Town role, so maybe she should consider doing it again.
Zoey Deutch might not be as famous as some of her contemporaries, but she has accomplished a lot in her career. Some of her most recent accomplishments include her Broadway debut in a revival of the Pulitzer-prize-winning play, Our Town, and her role in the sequel to Clint Eastwood’s movie, Juror.
Although Deutch once auditioned for a role in the DCU, she has yet to get the chance to make her debut in the superhero franchise. Now that James Gunn’s DCU franchise is set to kick off soon with Superman leading the charge as the first film from his arsenal, the filmmaker could finally do justice to this comic character by giving it to Deutch.
Zoey Deutch Could Come Full Circle If James Gunn Were to Cast Her as This Comic Character in His DCU Reboot
Zoey Deutch made her professional acting debut when she was 15 with a role on the Disney Channel show, The Suite Life on Deck. Her breakthrough came with her role in the big-screen project, Beautiful Creatures. Since then, she has played many diverse roles, two of which have been alongside Top Gun: Maverick star Glen Powell.
Deutch has yet to get her chance to shine in a superhero movie, but what many might not know is that she once auditioned for the role of Batgirl. In a recent interview with Josh Horowitz on the Happy, Sad, Confused podcast, The Politician actress was asked about it. Unfortunately, she did not seem to remember much about it. She said:
It was a couple years ago. I mean I don’t remember if I was able to read a script before testing for it, but I remember it. Like, those things are so funny. I’ve only been involved in a couple of them, but there’s a lot that goes on around it, and it kind of gets blurry, if that makes sense. I didn’t really know what it was, but it of course was a big opportunity and I would love to be in one of those movies. I find them to be so fun.
Batgirl is one of those comic book characters that has not been adapted into live-action properly even though a complete movie was made and then shelved because it was not considered good enough.
So, the only live-action version of the character the fans have had the opportunity to see so far is that of Alicia Silverstone in 1997’s Batman & Robin. That said, it would be a full-circle moment for Deutch if Gunn were to cast her in the role.
Zoey Deutch Manifested Her Role in Our Town
Deutch is starring in the Broadway revival of Our Town alongside Katie Holmes and Jim Parsons. Considering this is the first time in over two decades that the play has been brought back, it was nothing short of a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity, and luckily, the Set It Up actress was able to grab it.
As it turns out, Deutch manifested doing this role and it worked for her. In her recent interview on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, she opened up about it.
I got a place in New York two years ago, just thinking, “One day, maybe they’ll do ‘Our Town’ and I can be in it.” And I told my agent this, and I thought he would say I was insane. And instead, he said, “This is so crazy. Last night, I had a conversation for the first time about ‘Our Town’ being done on Broadway in 20 years.” And I thought that was a really wild sign from the universe.
Eight months later, she was filming the movie Anniversary when her agent called to tell her that he had managed to fix a meeting with director Kenny Leon for her. The consequences of that meeting are very evident. So, if Deutch were to manifest a role as Batgirl, who knows? Maybe it could happen.
